Job description

mx51 is a payments-as-a-service solution for banks, non-bank acquirers, and other merchant service providers. We are building a payment platform that allows merchants to accept payments in-store, in-app and online, whilst consolidating all their data on a real-time business management dashboard.

This role is a 6 month fix-term maternity leave cover.

We are seeking a motivated and commercially sharp lawyer to join our team as a Commercial Manager. This is an opportunity to move beyond a traditional legal role and develop deep commercial expertise by working directly with our Chief Operating Officer (COO).

You will be at the heart of our business, shaping key commercial relationships and driving our growth. In this role, you will build contracts, negotiate them, and manage the strategic partnerships that they represent. This position is ideal for a legal professional eager to apply their skills to a broader business context.

What You'll Do:

  • Drive Strategic Deals: Work alongside senior leadership to structure, draft, and negotiate key customer, channel, and strategic partnership agreements that underpin our growth.
  • Lead High-Impact Negotiations: Take the lead on negotiating complex and high-value contracts, ensuring they align with our strategic objectives and mitigate risk.
  • Shape Commercial Strategy: Provide critical commercial and legal insights on new business initiatives, product launches, and market entry strategies.
  • Manage Strategic Partnerships: Oversee our portfolio of POS partner agreements, leading negotiations for amendments and ensuring these relationships deliver maximum value.
  • Own the Commercial Framework: Develop and manage our contract management system, creating a single source of truth for all commercial agreements and ensuring compliance with our customer obligations.
  • Collaborate Across the Business: Act as a key advisor to internal stakeholders (including Product, Sales, and Finance), providing expert guidance on contract interpretation and commercial best practices.
  • Optimizse Supplier Relationships: Oversee our strategic procurement and vendor management function, focusing on value, performance, and alignment with our commercial goals.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • A qualified lawyer with 3-5 years of experience in a reputable private practice or in-house team.
  • Demonstrable experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.
  • An ambitious and proactive individual with a strong desire to transition from a purely legal role into a strategic commercial position.
  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • A strategic thinker who can balance legal risk with commercial opportunity.

What we offer

You will be joining an incredible team who are committed to our vision and company values. Our innovative culture gives you opportunities to make real contributions that will shape the future of the business. In addition to a fun and flexible work environment, we also offer:

  • Work from overseas up to 4 weeks per year
  • Annual team offsite
  • Social events run by our social committee
  • Swap a public holiday and take an alternative day off
  • Paid leave for volunteering
  • Employee Share Option Plan (subject to invitation)
  • Paid parental leave for primary and secondary carers
  • Novated lease and salary sacrifice options
