Job description

Our client is seeking a Principal Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Engineer to support the MCFR program. The role centers on creating methodologies for conducting nuclear material flow calculations and analyses to support development of material control and accounting (MC&A) approaches for MCFR technologies

In this role, you will collaborate across design disciplines to characterize nuclear material movement and develop concepts for detecting inventory anomalies across all stages of MCFR plant design. Your contributions will inform security and MC&A strategies and engagement with domestic and international safeguards stakeholders. This role is remote, with monthly travel for on-site work.

Tasks:

  • Create processes and tools for characterizing nuclear material flow through MCFR plants, including approaches for MC&A
  • Develop methodology for detecting inventory losses or anomalies and approaches for mitigation and resolution
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, multi-disciplinary engineering teams to integrate safeguards and security requirements into all stages of design and concept of operations development for MCFR plants
  • Advocate for safeguards and security requirements and constraints in MCFR design activities
  • Facilitate licensing activities for MCFR technology

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in nuclear or chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, material science, or a related field + minimum of 15 years relevant experience in safeguards.
  • Prior experience with DOE or NRC material accounting and control programs is required.
  • Prior experience implementing safeguards solutions for advanced reactors and fuel cycles is required.
  • Familiarity with conventional approaches for unattended monitoring systems (UMS) and state-of-the-art R&D in UMS is required.
  • Good working knowledge of molten salt reactor core design and/or molten salt chemistry is desired.
  • Prior experience conducting diversion path analysis or acquisition pathway analysis for nuclear material safeguards is desired.
  • Ability and desire to work in a rapidly evolving and iterative design environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The service provider will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork
