Sportsbook Architect

Location: Hybrid - Malta or Remote from Europe

What You’ll Do

System Architecture & Design

• Design and evolve the platform architecture across sportsbook, and internal game systems.

• Define service boundaries, API contracts, data models, and integration patterns.

• Architect scalable backend systems, low-latency APIs, and real-time pipelines (WebSockets, odds feeds, game sessions).

• Design distributed systems with high availability, fault tolerance, and strong consistency for financial transactions.

• Evaluate technologies, run POCs, and lead architectural decision-making.

Scalability, Reliability & Performance

• Design systems to support high player traffic and major traffic spikes during sporting events.

• Implement caching, database optimizations, and performance patterns (Redis, CDN, pub/sub).

• Identify architectural bottlenecks and propose solutions.

• Define capacity planning and auto-scaling strategies.

Security & Operations

• Define security architecture for authentication, authorization, API protection, and fraud prevention.

• Oversee logging, monitoring, observability, and operational readiness.

• Design disaster recovery, backup strategies, and failover mechanisms.

• Support production troubleshooting and participate in on-call escalations as needed.

Technical Leadership

• Align architecture across frontend, backend, DevOps, and game teams.

• Establish technical standards, patterns, and best practices.

• Lead design reviews, advise teams during development, and guide CI/CD architecture.

• Mentor engineers and collaborate closely with product and business stakeholders.

Documentation & Communication

• Maintain clear architectural documentation and decision records (ADRs).

• Communicate architectural trade-offs and recommendations to engineering and leadership.

What You Bring

• 8+ years building high-volume, transactional distributed systems, with at least 3+ years operating specifically as a Software Architect or Principal Engineer.

• Hands-on, pragmatic, and comfortable in a fast-moving environment. You can translate complex architectural trade-offs into clear terms for both engineers and business stakeholders.

• Deep expertise in Node.js, Java, Go, Python, or similar.

• Deep understanding of WebSockets, stateful connections, and message streaming (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub).

• Relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and high-performance caching (Redis).

• Advanced knowledge of AWS or GCP, container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes/ECS), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).

• Microservices, REST/GraphQL APIs, and CI/CD best practices.
