  • Develop and execute patent filing strategies to protect Solventum's products and technologies based on understanding of Solventum's portfolio
  • Manage the global patent portfolio and perform Freedom to Operate (FTO) analyses to align with business priorities

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
The position reports directly to the Assistant Chief IP Counsel, Senior Director, and is responsible for supporting intellectual property needs of Solventum’s global Infection Prevention and Sterilization Solutions business. This role involves close collaboration with the Assistant Chief IP Counsel, IP Operations, and research and development personnel at all levels.

How you will make an impact

  • Intellectual property (IP) generation support:
    • Facilitate and guide the submission of invention disclosures and lead discussions on patent filing and trade secret authorizations for the global business
    • Independently manage work of US and foreign outside IP counsel to ensure high quality patent preparation and prosecution, considering impact and cost on the Solventum business and the business’ strategies, priorities and goals
    • Implement and execute patent filing strategies using knowledge of Solventum products and technologies to shape filing and protection strategies

  • Global Patent Portfolio Management
    • Responsible for the business’ global patent portfolio management and review, ensuring alignment with the business’ strategies, priorities and goals

  • Freedom to Operate (FTO)
    • Develop and execute effective FTO search strategies and review
       
  • IP Advocacy and Education
    • Champion the importance of IP in protecting Solventum’s innovation and driving business growth by educating clients
    • Simplify and explain key IP concepts in practical, accessible ways

  • R&D IP Point of Contact
    • Act as the primary liaison between R&D teams and the IP business counsel, addressing IP-related inquiries and escalating complex matters to the business IP Counsel as needed
       
  • Project management and process improvements
    • Continuously evaluate workflows across the IP generation life cycle, identify areas for improvement, develop improvement options and recommendations, and lead improvement initiatives

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role, Solventum requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering or Materials Science. Degrees in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and/or demonstrated experience in polymeric materials, adhesives, hydrogels, silicones, or medical device materials will also be considered.
  • 5 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution
  • Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office

  • Demonstrated strength in organizational and project management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and engage across cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated strength in time management and project prioritization
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging for business, R&D and cross-functional partners
  • Demonstrated success leading process improvements, including the ability to access workflows, identify gaps or inefficiencies, and recommend, manage and communicate changes effectively
  • Experience within the medical device or med tech industries
  • Laboratory experience

  • Remote

Travel: May include up to 5% domestic travel

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $143,200 - $196,900, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience. In addition, this position may be eligible for a range of benefits (e.g., Medical, Dental & Vision, Health Savings Accounts, Health Care & Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Disability Benefits, Life Insurance, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences and Retirement Benefits, etc.).
