About the role:
The Biomedical Engineer will be a member of ConvaTec’s Applied Research team at the ConvaTec Technology Center in the greater Boston area. They will be part of the Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering team conducting rigorous research examining the interaction between our medical device materials and biological systems. This individual will conduct hands-on laboratory experimentation in our BSL1 and BSL2 laboratory facilities. Experiments will include techniques in human and mammalian cell culture, biochemical assays, biomaterials characterization, and tissue processing. The candidate will work closely with Engineers and Scientists to deliver results addressing key needs across active projects in Convatec’s business units, supporting R&D, life cycle management, and product claims projects. This individual will independently operate laboratory equipment, propose feasible experimental work plans, and summarize resulting data to support the needed project goals. They will be an integral part of data-driven decision making for the Biointerfaces and Regenerative Engineering team and as such rigorous interrogation of data to ensure the highest quality in collaboration with teammates is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct laboratory research safely and rigorously.
Act as a team player, with responsibility for executing biological testing on diverse projects as directed by senior members of the BRE team and/or the broader Applied Research group.
Maintain accurate, organized records of laboratory data and observations.
Install, operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment when needed.
Develop expertise in running standard test methods, eventually serving as the subject matter expert in sample preparation and handling, equipment setup, etc.
Research potential new products and processes by testing the physical, chemical, and/or biological properties of materials and ingredients under various conditions
Help senior scientists and engineers to develop new laboratory capabilities and test methods necessary for experimentation and materials characterization.
Assess safety hazards of all new test methods and equipment. Work with our Facilities and EH&S manager to ensure proper PPE and procedures are in place for operation.
Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) for new test methods developed.
Work with senior scientists and engineers to establish feasible experimental work plans for various projects. Analyze data with appropriate statistical methods.
Skills & Experience:
1-3 years of hands-on experience in a biology laboratory is required.
Experience in biological laboratory techniques including mammalian cell culture, biochemical assays such as ELISA, colorimetric/fluorescent assays, PCR, and/or western blot is required.
Microscopy and image analysis techniques such as direct and indirect fluorescence, phase contrast, brightfield, and/or SEM are a plus.
Materials science/engineering characterization techniques are a plus.
Qualifications/Education:
Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, biology, bioengineering or similar.
Software proficiencies in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are required.
