What this role is all about:

The Manager, Special Accounts, is responsible for managing a portfolio of delinquent and non-performing commercial loan accounts. Leading a team of Special Account Officers, the incumbent will leverage financial analysis, loan restructuring and negotiation to effectively manage and recover non-performing loans. They will provide guidance and support to stakeholders, oversee asset inventory management and remarketing, and lead staff in effective collection techniques. The incumbent is accountable for resolving and providing recommendations regarding delinquent accounts by engaging with legal counsel and professional insolvency practitioners as necessary. This role is open to remote working arrangements within B.C. While we welcome all applications, we anticipate filling this role with a candidate located in British Columbia.

What you’ll do:

Portfolio Management

  • Act as a subject matter expert, provide guidance and support to stakeholders related to commercial collections.
  • Manage a portfolio of delinquent and non-performing commercial loan accounts, including asset inventory management and remarketing.
  • Exercise authority to enforce security or engage and instruct legal counsel as required.
  • Oversee insurance claims and related negotiations or legal actions.
  • Oversee and manage distressed loans, continuously assessing the status of problem loans and developing strategies to recover owed amounts.
  • Negotiating and work with borrowers to restructure loans and find feasible repayment solutions.
  • Oversee and conduct required financial analysis and collateral valuations to assess recovery prospects.
  • Lead effective reporting practices on the status of recovery efforts and present them to senior leaders as required.
  • Develop recommendations related to the development, enhancement, and amendments to recovery processes.

Leadership

  • Contributes to strategic planning discussions by offering insights from a Credit Recovery and Risk Mitigation perspective, while supporting cross-functional alignment and maintaining awareness of broader organizational goals.
  • Executes long term business plans considering complex internal and external factors including emerging requirements and organizational interdependencies.
  • Communicates department strategies and objectives, ensuring understanding and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Builds a high performing and collaborative team, ensuring effective prioritization of tasks and projects, managing stakeholders, and leading cross-functional agile teams.
  • Conducts ongoing training, coaching and feedback with employees through regular meetings and performance development.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engage appropriate professional insolvency practitioners as necessary while enforcing real and personal property security interests and ensure effective resolution of distressed loans.
  • Respond to inquiries to support the development and understanding of collection processes and practices.
  • Engage directly with members to support the recovery process, providing clear communications related to account activity and status.
  • Participates in the management of BCFSA audits, internal audit and regulatory relationships.
  • Provides technical advice to Beem’s commercial advisors relating to non-compliance with their agreed covenants and solutions to resolve issues.
  • Provide guidance during annual performance reviews and proactively address risks related to non-compliance or substandard evaluations.
  • When appropriate travels to members' places of business and real estate project sites, for the purpose of research, collateral evaluation, and problem investigation/resolution.
  • Mentor and lead staff on effective collection techniques, realization actions, legal remedies, and turnaround management strategies.
  • Collaborate with Learning & Development as needed on training initiatives including developing content.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, across the organization to ensure consistency and alignment with business and strategic objectives.
  • Maintains strong collaborative relationships with external partners, agencies, and vendors to ensure the successful execution of initiatives.
  • Drives team collaboration and cohesive to deliver on department and organizational objectives and initiatives.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelors degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of direct lending experience including commercial in both real estate and business lending. 
  • 7+ years of related experience in managing delinquent and non-performing commercial loan accounts. 
  • Expert knowledge of collections practices
  • Expert understanding of collection laws and procedures in Canada
  • Proficiency in conducting financial analysis and collateral valuations. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of distressed loans and develop recovery strategies. 
  • Experience in building, leading and coaching high-performance teams.
  • Solid knowledge of the Personal Property Security Act
  • Solid background in credit analysis and credit structuring
  • Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders and provide clear and effective written and verbal communications.  
  • Equivalent combination of the above may be appropriate
