About the organization


Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping institution. The ACLED team collects conflict information; conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios; and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED’s work is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used realtime data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.



The Internship Opportunity


ACLED is recruiting a Digital Content Creation Intern to join our External Affairs team for a minimum period of 6 months.

In this internship, you’ll support our multimedia team on video and multimedia projects, digital content generation, graphic design, brand management, and a bit of marketing. We’re looking for someone with academic and some practical experience in digital communications and an intuitive eye for visual identity and design. Most of our work involves data and complex analysis, so strong candidates will be able to translate dense information into digestible and interesting visual storytelling and infographics.


ACLED will be able to provide proof of acceptance of the internship role as well as successful completion of the internship.This position is open to Bachelor’s or Master’s students in their final year and students seeking a work placement as part of academic studies. Recent graduates seeking practical experience or aiming to start a career in content creation for research and data initiatives may also apply.

Specific roles and responsibilities


  • Video editingproduction and animation: As directed by the Multimedia Coordinator (who supervises this position), create engaging, dynamic, and informative videos for our social media and website that accurately reflect the subject matter and our branding. Create bespoke motion graphics that promote consistent visual identity.
  • Data and visual storytelling and graphic design: Design multimedia assets, data visualizations, infographics, storytelling pieces, illustrations, and other visual elements to create immersive experiences for audiences.
  • Brand and digital assets management, marketing, and outreach: Help implement ACLED’s branding strategy, in keeping with our branding guidelines. Help maintain the repository of digital assets in Google Photos and Google Drive.
  • Administrative support: Provide general administrative support to the multimedia team as well as ad hoc, occasional support to the wider External Affairs team.


    • Skills and competencies


      Education

      • Required: A recently completed or almostcompleted bachelor’s or master’s degree in visual communications, content creation, video editing and production, graphic design, journalism, or a program that involves the application of digital design.
      • Preferred: An interest in or previous experience of data and quantitativequalitative research.

        • Required experience (i.e., this experience is essential to a successful application):

          • 1–3 years with Adobe Suite, Canva, Flourish, Tableau, andor Figma programs as well as other design software.
              • Specifically, Premier, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, and Photoshop.

                • Preferred experience (i.e., we don’t expect you to check every box on this list, but please mention the experiences you do have on your CV or in your cover letter):


                  • Visual storytelling, data visualizations, motion graphics, and conceptualizing, designing, and production of highquality, innovative, and attentiongrabbing materials (video and static) for webbased communications.
                  • Creating digital assets for social media (YouTube, LinkedIn, TwitterX, Facebook, and Instagram) and an understanding of current video platform trends.
                  • Editing audio for podcasts or other multimedia projects and sourcing music for productions.
                  • Sourcing digital assets such as editorial photography, video clips, motion graphics, icons, etc.
                  • Creating animations or illustrations for educational and informational content.
                  • Flourish storytelling technology and other animated data visualization tools to include motion visuals in reports, on social media, and to be incorporated into videos (preferred) or a willingness to learn the program.
                  • Brand management, adapting content for audiences, working in set templates andor producing new materials for public relations.

                    • We’re also looking for:

                      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills—fluency in English is essential. Fluency in other languages—especially French, Arabic, Portuguese, or Spanish—is an advantage).
                      • Ability to multitask and collaborate with colleagues across departments in a fastpaced, remote environment with limited supervision.
                      • Strong organizational and planning skills.
                      • Close attention to detail.
                      • An ability to meet deadlines and communicate effectively on the status of projects.
                      • A willingness to seek and implement feedback as well as provide constructive feedback to others.
