Peer Specialist

Job Summary:
CASES is seeking a Peer Specialist to join the team to support our supervised released program. This unit will pioneer innovative strategies to support individuals on Supervised Release who face significant needs and challenges affecting their daily lives and program participation. The Peer Specialist, will working alongside a clinician, will be at the forefront of delivering proactive, field-based direct services to program participants, with a focus on mental health, substance abuse, and employment challenges.
Salary: The salary range for the Peer Specialist position is $50,241 - $55,545 per year. (Dependent on NYS Peer Certification).
Shift Hours: The Peer Specialist position is full time from Monday through Friday 1pm to 9pm.
Location Address: Industrious, 200 Broadway, New York, NY, 10038
Workplace Flexibility: This position has flexible work flexibility where for which staff have flexibility to complete their workday from home or another suitable space, typically after reporting to the office and/or engaging in field or community-based work.
- Will conduct field-based engagement and supervision services to help participants effectively utilize pretrial services and participate in recovery supports.
- Will travel throughout various NYC neighborhoods and working outdoors for most of the working day regardless weather conditions.
- Participate in regularly occurring team meetings and morning “huddles” to review cases collaboratively and inspire ongoing discussion of emerging participant needs and trends.
- Participate in regularly occurring clinical supervision along with clinical partner to identify ongoing needs of assigned participants and establish ongoing plans for aftercare support and permanency.
- Raise participant awareness of available services, pathways to recovery, and help remove barriers to mental health and substance use treatment and service access.
- Will assist participants to select and utilize the things that bring a sense of passion, purpose, and meaning in their lives, coaching participant as they identify barriers to engaging in these activities.
- Will assist participants with skills development that guides towards a more independent life.
- Participate in supervision, case review, staff meetings, and trainings to develop motivational interviewing, trauma-informed, peer support, case management, and self-help competence.
- Peer specialist will provide services in a way that is responsive to the race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and criminal legal history of program participants.
- Help ensure we maintain a safe working environment by reporting any hazards or unsafe conditions, e.g., liquid spill in hallway, to the appropriate facilities staff member or supervisor.
- Any other duties as required by the Program Director and other supervisory staff.
What we are looking for:
- High School Diploma or Equivalency degree.
- Minimum of one year experience providing peer services in a social services program providing direct services to individuals, families and/or groups, preferably in a field-based setting.
- Knowledge of community-based resources and support services for vulnerable individuals.
- Highly motivated self-starter, able to translate goals into action and deliver success outcomes.
- Candidates who are justice-impacted or identify as having lived experience in various support systems are encouraged to apply.
- Comfort and experience working in various NYC neighborhoods and working outdoors for most of the workday regardless of weather conditions.
Preferred Skills:
- Satisfactory completion of a recognized Peer Training program with externship experiences preferable.
- Certification as a Peer Specialist, Certified Recovery Coach (CARC) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) strongly preferred.
- Experience with forensic, legal system or field-based mobile treatment teams strongly preferred.
- Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English
- Strong analytical, mediating, and negotiation skills.
- Excellent case management skills.
- Experience working with individuals involved in criminal legal system preferred.
