Director of Engineering - Financial Technology

As Director of Financial Technology at Edelman Financial Engines, you will lead a small team of engineers to deliver innovative technology solutions and applications supporting the Investment Management Team.  You will collaborate cross-functionally with Financial Researchers, Portfolio Management, Product, and Data Science teams to align technology initiatives with business objectives.  You’ll lead a team with a background in finance that utilizes Python and open-source technologies to build backend applications integrated with internal platforms and production systems via APIs.  Strong expertise in relational databases and financial systems is essential. 

Responsibilities:

• Define and execute the strategic vision for financial technology platforms and services.
• Lead design, architecture, and delivery of scalable systems for investment management initiatives, including prototyping of new service offerings, algorithm testing systems, advanced analytics, and tools to support internal teams
• Integrate optimization and research tools for financial portfolios
• Oversee data infrastructure, ELT pipelines, and operational dashboards, ensuring data quality, security, and compliance.
• Develop and retain top engineering talent; guide team in building robust web applications and developing tools on internal platform
• Ensure best practices in testing, documentation, and model governance

Requirements:

• 8+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in a leadership role.
• Proven track record in delivering financial technology solutions and managing high-performing teams.
• Deep expertise in Python, web frameworks (Django, Flask), modern JS (React, Vue, etc), and cloud-based data systems.
• Experience with data science, ELT pipelines, and SQL.
• Experience with AWS a plus, experience integrating AI into workflows a plus.
• Strong grasp of financial concepts
• Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and cross-functional leadership skills.

Edelman Financial Engines takes a market-based approach to pay. The expected base salary range for this role nationally is $233,000 - $311,200.  However, final base pay will be carefully determined based on several factors, including responsibilities, job-related skills, relevant experience, geographic location, and market conditions. Additionally, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits, such as a discretionary bonus, health, dental and other wellness plans, and 401(k) contributions.
