Job description

Coursera was launched in 2012 by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller with a mission to provide universal access to worldclass learning. It is now one of the largest online learning platforms in the world, with 183 million registered learners as of June 30, 2025. Coursera partners with over 350 leading university and industry partners to offer a broad catalog of content and credentials, including courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates, and degrees. Coursera’s platform innovations enable instructors to deliver scalable, personalized, and verified learning experiences to their learners. Institutions worldwide rely on Coursera to upskill and reskill their employees, citizens, and students in highdemand fields such as GenAI, data science, technology, and business. Coursera is a Delaware public benefit corporation and a B Corp.

Join us in our mission to create a world where anyone, anywhere can transform their life through access to education. Were seeking talented individuals who share our passion and drive to revolutionize the way the world learns.

At Coursera, we are committed to building a globally diverse team and are thrilled to extend employment opportunities to individuals in any country where we have a legal entity. We require candidates to possess eligible working rights and have a compatible timezone overlap with their team to facilitate seamless collaboration.

Coursera has a commitment to enabling flexibility and workspace choices for employees. Our interviews and onboarding are entirely virtual, providing a smooth and efficient experience for our candidates. As an employee, we enable you to select your main way of working, whether its from home, one of our offices or hubs, or a coworking space near you.

Team Overview:

The Content Management team is pivotal in scaling Coursera’s global educational catalog content operations, driving efficient lifecycle management, content metadata management, and comprehensive curation enablement across the content ecosystem. Our mission is to build predictive, transparent, and automated systems that optimize the sourcing, tagging, curation, launch, and lifecycle management of content, enabling us to rapidly adapt to learner needs and maximize growth opportunities.

The team focuses on several key areas:

  • Automated, Integrated Content Lifecycle Management: Developing integrated systems and workflows to streamline content lifecycle processes, enabling crossfunctional teams to effectively manage sourcing, production, maintenance, optimization, and deprecation of content at scale.

  • Unified Content Observability: Providing endtoend visibility into content metadata and lifecycle statuses, ensuring crossfunctional teams can selfserve critical information to enhance business planning, functional roadmaps, and enterprise customer experiences.

  • Enhanced Content Discoverability: Improving catalog usability through enriched metadata and advanced filtering capabilities, empowering customers and internal teams to efficiently identify, package, and deploy curated content solutions.

  • Lifecycle Performance Analytics: Offering insightful analytics dashboards to content partners and internal teams, contextualizing content performance, identifying optimization opportunities, and providing actionable insights for portfolio expansion based on realtime learner demand.

  • Expanded Partner and Content Creator Onboarding: Implementing scalable, selfguided onboarding processes for new content partners, including institutions and SMEs, to accelerate content launches, improve quality, and drive partner retention. This includes structured onboarding milestones, proactive communication frameworks, and realtime access to learner demand data.

    • As the Engineering Manager for the Content Management team, you will lead a fullstack engineering team responsible for creating these critical capabilities. Your role involves technical leadership, architectural guidance, close collaboration with crossfunctional stakeholders, and driving strategic initiatives to deliver scalable, innovative solutions aligned with Coursera’s broader strategic goals. You will foster a highperformance team culture, encourage innovation, and ensure operational excellence, directly contributing to Courseras mission of delivering impactful, highquality learning experiences worldwide.

      Responsibilities:
      • Building the Team: Partner with crossfunctional stakeholders (Product, Design, Data, Content Operations) to refine the team’s charter, ensure alignment with broader business goals, and support overall team health and growth.
      • Mentoring: Act as a role model and coach for engineers. Conduct regular career development conversations, provide constructive feedback, and inspire engineers to achieve their best.
      • Hiring: Identify key skill gaps and growth areas on the team. Drive the hiring pipeline by sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding talented engineers to build a wellrounded, highperforming team.
      • Advising (Technical Leadership): Provide handson technical guidance to engineers as they design systems and tackle complex problems. Encourage sound architectural decisions and help team members grow into technical leaders in their product work.
      • Product Enablement: In partnership with Product Management, curate a compelling vision for content authoring. Translate highlevel product needs into an actionable engineering roadmap. Prioritize and drive key initiatives forward, run sprint planning and standups, and ensure the team delivers product features that delight content creators and learners.
      • Platform Leadership: Balance building new features with managing tech debt to maintain a reliable, scalable platform. Evolve the content authoring platform for high leverage – architect systems and services that can accelerate multiple product initiatives across Coursera. Ensure consistency and quality in the user experience by creating reusable components and frameworks for content.
      • Mediating: Foster an inclusive, collaborative team environment. Proactively address interpersonal issues and facilitate crucial conversations with empathy and fairness. Ensure every team member feels empowered, engaged, and comfortable sharing ideas and concerns.
        • Basic Qualifications:
          • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, OR equivalent practical experience (e.g. 3+ years as a handson software engineer building web applications or distributed systems).
          • Industry Experience: 5+ years in software product development or a related field, including prior experience leading engineering teams (2+ years in an engineering management role). You should have a proven track record of delivering software projects and managing crossfunctional development teams.
          • Technical Background: Strong software engineering foundation with experience in system design, data structures, and algorithms. (You should have professional codingdevelopment experience in your background, even if this role is not an IC position.)

            • Preferred Qualifications:
              • Leadership: Demonstrated integrity, transparency, and inspiration in your leadership style. Ability to empower and motivate a team to achieve ambitious goals.

              • Emotional Intelligence: High degree of empathy, humility, and effective communication skills. Experience building inclusive team cultures and handling interpersonal dynamics with patience and tact.

              • Problem Solving: Creative and analytical mindset with rigorous technical problemsolving skills. Ability to navigate complexity and guide the team to wellreasoned, innovative solutions.

              • Thriving in Ambiguity: Excellence in driving clarity and results in ambiguous, complex situations. Boldness and grit to chart a path forward even when the way is not fully defined.

              • Product & Platform Vision: Experience balancing rapid product feature delivery with longterm platform health. Proven ability to manage technical debt and invest in platform infrastructure that yields high leverage across multiple products or use cases.

              • Platform Ownership: Experience managing a team that owns a product platform or critical infrastructure component. Ideally, you have firsthand experience defining the team’s charter and boundaries of ownership, especially in the context of evolving a new platform.
              • Experience with Generative AI applications including prompt engineering and using APIs such as OpenAI, Claude, or Gemini.

              • Scalable Systems Expertise: Demonstrated experience building and operating largescale distributed systems, using modern backend technologies such as Java or Scala and API frameworks like GraphQL and gRPC. You understand how to design systems for high availability, performance, and maintainability at scale.

              • FullStack Familiarity: Familiarity with modern frontend technologies (React, TypeScript, or similar) and how frontend interfaces integrate with backend services. While depth in one area (backend or frontend) is expected, the ability to understand and guide endtoend system architecture is highly valued.
