Job description

As Head of Data, your mission is to make sure that high quality and timely data drives the big decisions at MarTrust.

You will lead MarTrust’s data team in ensuring our data infrastructure and data modelling is accurate, cost efficient and secure and that end users have accurate, timely and trusted data.

Together with your team, you will deliver analysis that goes deeper than just dashboards, to support the C-suite in answering the “why” behind the numbers and drive the big decisions at MarTrust.

Team Leadership:
Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing, remote first data team, including data scientists, analysts, and engineers.

Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning within the data function.

Carry out annual performance evaluations and goal settings for the team members.

Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute a data strategy to support MarTrust’s growth, operational efficiency, and competitive positioning in the maritime payments industry.
Align data initiatives with MarTrust and the wider Marcura group objectives, including revenue growth and cost optimization.
Collaborate with C-suite executives to integrate data and insights into business planning and decision-making.

Data Infrastructure
Ensure the quality and cost control of our data infrastructure.

Drive the adoption of best-in-class data management practices, including data quality, integration, and accessibility.

Analytics and Insights:
Support MarTrust’s continuous drive towards a performance oriented culture by providing training, insights and data for our quarterly OKR process

Leverage data to identify opportunities for process automation, fraud prevention, and cost reduction in maritime payment operations.

Stakeholder Engagement:
Partner with internal teams (e.g., finance, operations, product, IT) to ensure data solutions meet business needs and drive cross-functional collaboration.

Compliance and Risk Management
Implement robust data security measures to protect sensitive payment and client data.

Mitigate risks associated with data breaches, inaccuracies, or regulatory non-compliance.

Ensure compliance with data privacy and financial regulations

Enforce and develop MarTrust’s data governance policies to ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Hands on ownership
You will lead the data team from the front. We expect you to take direct ownership of mission critical tasks, while also ensuring that these tasks find long-term owners inside or outside the team over time.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Engineering (e.g., Computer Science Engineering), Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • Experience in the financial services or payments industry, ideally with exposure to B2B payment platforms or fintech companies.
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading cross-functional data teams in dynamic, fast-paced environments. Ideally as a data leader in a PE or VC backed company.
  • Hands-on experience with data governance, regulatory compliance (e.g., GDPR, PCI DSS), and risk management in financial transactions.
  • Experience with maritime or logistics industries is a plus, particularly in understanding payment flows or trade finance.
  • Strong leadership abilities.
  • Expertise in data architecture, data modeling, and database management.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-based data solutions.
  • Experience with the tools we work with, or other equivalent ones (dbt, BigQuery, Stitch, Segment, Fivetran, Metabase, Apache Airflow).
  • Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge, including GDPR and experience implementing data governance frameworks and ensuring data security.
