The Entry-Level Data Automation Engineer supports the design and execution of secure, efficient data workflows that power MACPAC’s Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) research projects. This junior role focuses on writing and testing basic scripts, performing data checks, and helping to automate repetitive tasks under the guidance of senior engineers and analysts.
Key Responsibilities
Write and maintain simple scripts for data cleaning, basic transformations, and file validation using Python, SQL, or similar tools.
Assist with importing, checking, and preparing large healthcare administrative datasets, including Medicaid and CHIP claims, eligibility, and encounter files.
Perform routine data quality checks and document results.
Support the automation of routine reports and data extracts.
Maintain clear documentation for scripts, workflows, and standard operating procedures.
Participate in team stand-ups, code reviews, and knowledge sharing sessions.
Learn and apply secure coding best practices and compliance standards.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Health Informatics, or a related technical field.
Some hands-on experience with Python, SQL, R, or similar scripting languages (through coursework, internships, or personal projects).
Familiarity with handling large datasets — coursework or internships involving healthcare or public policy data is a plus.
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new technologies and federal data standards.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Exposure to Medicaid or CHIP administrative data through academic projects or internships is helpful but not required.
Knowledge of basic data privacy and security concepts.
