Overview:
The Technical Director, Nuclear Waste Service will lead and manage nuclear waste management services within WSP. This role involves overseeing the development and implementation of strategies for the safe and efficient management of nuclear waste, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and driving innovation in waste management solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management:
- Develop and lead multidisciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, and project managers.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for nuclear waste management services.
- Ensure the team meets project deadlines and maintains high standards of quality and safety.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Project Oversight:
- Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of nuclear waste management projects.
- Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of clients.
- Manage project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Client Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, including government agencies, utilities, and private sector companies.
- Understand client needs and provide tailored solutions to meet their requirements.
- Represent the firm at industry conferences, meetings, and events.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure all projects comply with relevant nuclear regulatory requirements and standards.
- Stay updated on changes in regulations and industry best practices.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and ensure all necessary permits and approvals are obtained.
- Innovation and Development:
- Drive innovation in nuclear waste management practices and technologies.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement new methodologies.
- Promote the adoption of advanced technologies and sustainable practices.
- Financial Management:
- Develop and manage the budgets for the portfolio of nuclear waste management programs and projects.
- Monitor financial performance and ensure profitability of projects.
- Prepare financial reports and forecasts for senior management.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree or PhD is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in nuclear waste management or a related field.
- Proven track record of managing large-scale nuclear waste projects.
- Experience working with regulatory bodies and ensuring compliance with nuclear regulations.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent project management and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build and maintain client relationships.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of current nuclear waste management technologies and practices.
Technical Skills:
- Nuclear Engineering Expertise:

- Understanding of nuclear physics, radiation protection, and radioactive waste characterization.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Familiarity with national and international nuclear regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to navigate and ensure compliance with regulations from bodies such as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
- Project Management:
- Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
- Experience in planning, executing, and overseeing large-scale nuclear waste projects.
- Risk management and mitigation strategies.
- Technical Analysis and Problem-Solving:
- Strong analytical skills to assess and solve complex technical issues related to nuclear waste.
- Ability to conduct technical evaluations and develop innovative solutions.
- Environmental Science and Engineering:
- Knowledge of environmental impact assessments and sustainability practices.
- Understanding of the environmental implications of nuclear waste disposal and remediation techniques.
- Advanced Technologies:
- Familiarity with cutting-edge technologies in nuclear waste treatment, storage, and disposal.
- Experience with remote handling systems, robotics, and automation in nuclear facilities.
- Data Analysis and Modeling:
- Proficiency in data analysis software and modeling tools used in nuclear waste management.
- Ability to interpret and utilize data for decision-making and process optimization.
- Safety and Quality Assurance:
- Strong focus on safety protocols and quality assurance in nuclear operations.
- Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in the nuclear industry.

Additional Qualifications for Canadian Candidates:
- Regulatory Knowledge:
- Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC): Familiarity with the CNSC's regulatory framework and requirements is essential. Candidates should have experience navigating CNSC regulations and ensuring compliance with Canadian nuclear safety standards.
- Provincial Regulations:
- Understanding of provincial regulations related to nuclear waste management and environmental protection.
- Security Clearance:
- Security Levels: Candidates must meet and maintain the required security clearance levels throughout their employment. This typically includes reliability status and may require secret or top-secret clearance depending on the nature of the projects
- Experience with Canadian Nuclear Projects:
- Local Experience: Demonstrated experience working on nuclear projects within Canada, including knowledge of local environmental impact assessments and permitting requirements
- Collaboration with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL):
- Experience working with CNL and other Canadian nuclear organizations on projects such as the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) and other decommissioning and remediation initiatives
- Indigenous Relations and Social Responsibility:
- Engagement with Indigenous Communities: Experience in building and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities and understanding the importance of Indigenous consultation and participation in nuclear projects
- Social Responsibility:
- Commitment to social responsibility and sustainable practices in nuclear waste management.
- Professional Certifications:
- Canadian Standards Association (CSA): Familiarity with CSA nuclear standards, such as CSA N288.7, N288.8, and N288.9, which pertain to groundwater protection, action levels for environmental releases, and fish impingement and entrainment programs
