Operations - Maintenance Supervisor

The Montpelier Dry Section Operator, whose line of reporting is highlighted on the Montpelier Organizational Chart, is responsible for operations, operating maintenance and quality in the dry section.

Job Purpose:

The Operations / Maintenance Supervisor will report directly to the Plant Manager and will supervise hourly operators. This position will be responsible for day-to-day supervision of the processing operation and maintenance employees. The candidate will be scheduling crew shift and task assignments and will direct operations, quality management and maintenance and procurement.

Essential Job Functions:

• Supervise daily operations of the plant, ensuring production goals, quality standards, and safety requirements are met.
• Lead and manage the maintenance team, including assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing training and guidance.
• Oversee the execution of preventative and corrective maintenance on plant equipment and mobile machinery to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
• Inspect operational areas and equipment regularly to identify potential issues and coordinate timely repairs.
• Coordinate with Production, Safety, and Environmental teams to ensure efficient and compliant plant operations.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of critical parts, tools, and supplies needed for ongoing maintenance activities.
• Ensure compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and company safety standards, conducting routine safety inspections and participating in audits and incident investigations.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation related to maintenance activities, equipment status, inspections, and employee work hours.
• Develop and implement work schedules and maintenance plans, adjusting resources to meet changing production needs or equipment emergencies.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including process optimization, equipment upgrades, and energy-saving projects.
• Provide hands-on support during emergencies or critical maintenance events, including troubleshooting and repair.
• Participate in budgeting and cost control efforts for maintenance and plant operations.

Education, Experience, Skills & Abilities: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mining Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
• Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial operations, maintenance, or mining environments, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Formal training or certification in areas such as:
  • Industrial Maintenance
  • Electrical Systems
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Hydraulics/Pneumatics
• MSHA Part 46/48 Certification preferred (or must be obtained within a specified timeframe after hire).
• Additional certifications such as OSHA 30, NCCER, or CMMS training are considered advantageous.
• Currently holds - Certified Virginia miner certification or the ability to pass the certification within 6 months
• Hands-on experience with crushing, screening, conveying, and drying systems typically used in sand mining and processing.
• Proven experience managing preventive and predictive maintenance programs and utilizing CMMS or equivalent systems for tracking work orders and equipment history.
• Working knowledge of MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA regulations, with a demonstrated commitment to safety compliance and culture.
• Solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; able to diagnose and troubleshoot plant equipment and mobile machinery.
• Familiarity with mobile equipment maintenance, including loaders, haul trucks, and other heavy machinery used in surface mining operations.
• Experience managing or collaborating with contractors, vendors, and service providers for specialized maintenance or capital projects.
• Knowledge of environmental controls and dust suppression systems commonly used in sand processing operations.
• Exposure to root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement methodologies such as 5S, Kaizen, or Lean principles is preferred.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with maintenance software and plant automation systems is a plus.
