SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Engineering Supervisor, the Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for working closely with highly skilled mechanical, electrical, and project management professionals, to design electrical systems based on calculations while conforming to sound engineering practices. This involves ensuring device performance reliability and conformance to customer specifications. In addition, this position is responsible for the ongoing implementation of improved quality and reliability of Muratec group company systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop and prepare electrical designs, and drawings, from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data while conforming to sound engineering practices.
- Create and maintain electrical schematics of electrical designs as well as other support drawings using EPLAN and AutoCAD electrical software during and after the build cycle. This involves consulting with other departments, project managers/engineers and fabrication groups before and after the build cycle and making changes to electrical drawings as necessary.
- Ensure equipment design integrity meets all aspects of functional design requirements, including rate capacity, strength, reliability and service life expectations using standard engineering practices and tools such as, sizing software, component sizing calculations and prototype testing if/when necessary.
- In collaboration with other departments and based on the risk analysis developed by the Project Team, develop, and integrate concepts that contribute to the safety of the equipment and its design. This includes capturing and addressing individual/human safety elements as well as machine safety.
- Create and maintain safety validation documentation including SISTEMA files.
- Ensure system performance reliability, conformance to customer specifications and quality standards. This includes participating in quality checks of completed designs and/or equipment.
- Design in accordance with Muratec group company standards and department procedures.
- Maintain device and system engineering drawing packages as well as other support documentation including information on conformance to standards.
- Maintain awareness of budget and schedule commitments during the design cycle. This involves bringing significant deviations to the attention of the Engineering Supervisor.
- Responsible for the research phase of purchasing for electrical parts. Justify product choice to the Project Manager and submit purchase orders to the purchasing department for all electrical components.
- Attend project kick off meetings to gain knowledge on project specifications, expectations and timelines and provide hours and material costs estimates.
- Schedule, chair, and create minutes for design reviews as required throughout the design cycle.
- Attend project update meetings to review and ensure projects are on budget and on schedule. This involves providing updates on the progress of electrical design.
- Participate in “post mortem” meetings to discuss project successes and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist in identifying and addressing electrical issues arising on the shop floor and/or at the customer site. This may include participating in site visits and/or coordinating investigations and activities needed to determine mode of failure, root cause analysis, repair requirements and design improvement recommendations.
- Assist the Engineering Supervisor in the implementation and maintenance of established goals for quality and reliability of Muratec group company systems as well as research new electrical devices and methods.
- Respond to inquiries, questions, concerns from individual employees, departments, and customers. This involves providing technical support in electrical design.
- Develop design related documentation, including operating, setup, repair and maintenance manuals and procedures. Including Spare part lists and recommendations.
- Assist with research and development investigations and studies as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality of information accessed in accordance with Muratec group company policies and procedures.
- Ensure all departmental procedures, health and safety policies, procedures, and responsibilities under the OHSA, are followed during all work activities on site and at the Grimsby Canada location
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; minimum three (3) years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer in an industrial/engineering/automation environment or equivalent combination of education and experience. AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN are preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to convert and perform engineering calculations in all units of measure, using appropriate levels of accuracy and units of precision. Ability to compute and conduct equipment process related rate analyses, determine critical ratios, and percent values of interdependent relationships and to convey complex findings in simple to interpret graphs and/or other types of visualizations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong ability to develop electrical designs of complex automated systems from basic concepts using engineering principles.
- Knowledge of electrical systems including 400/480/600VAC 3-phase, controls, I/O systems, servo control, safety circuits and pneumatics.
- Familiarity with modular cabling technologies, cable tray systems and electrical installations.
- Electrical wiring experience and familiarity with mechanical systems is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of sound engineering practices, industry standards and electrical codes with a commitment to adhering to applicable standards and best practices.
- Familiarity in safety system design with experience in assessing safety circuits to confirm devices and architecture comply with relevant standards and achieve expected Performance Level.
- Knowledge of basic robotic operations, including mechanical, electrical, and software interfacing.
- Understanding of, and experience with, conveying and material handling equipment is considered an asset.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of multi-function team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to deal courteously and effectively with all levels of staff, customers, vendors, partners, and any other potential stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook, and other common software packages. An ability to learn and use other software packages, such as our ERP software, is required.
TRAVEL
This position is up to 20% travel. A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Must have or be eligible to obtain a passport for international travel.
