About the Role

The Director, Benefits is responsible for the strategic direction, design, implementation, and administration of comprehensive benefits programs that attract, retain, and engage employees. This role ensures competitive, compliant, and cost-effective benefit offerings while aligning with the organization’s total rewards strategy. The Director will lead a Benefits Manager and collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to optimize employee benefits programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Program Design:

  • Develop and execute a long-term benefits strategy that supports business goals and enhances employee well-being.

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of health, welfare, retirement, leave, voluntary and wellness programs.

  • Continuously assess market trends and industry benchmarks to ensure competitive benefit offerings.

  • Partner with leadership to drive benefits initiatives that support workforce engagement and productivity.

Benefits Administration & Compliance:

  • Ensure all benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, and FMLA.

  • Manage relationships with benefits vendors, brokers, and consultants to optimize plan performance and cost efficiency.

  • Oversee annual benefits enrollment, communications, and employee education initiatives.

  • Monitor program effectiveness, utilization, and financial impact through data analysis and reporting.

Team Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Lead and develop benefits employee(s), providing coaching, mentorship, and performance management.

  • Partner with HRBPs, HRIS, Finance, Payroll, Legal, and other departments to ensure seamless benefits administration and integration.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on benefits-related matters, advising leadership and communicating to employees.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • 15+ years of experience in benefits administration, with at least 4 years managing a team.

  • Strong knowledge of benefits regulations, compliance, and best practices.

  • Experience designing and managing benefits programs (H&W, 401(k), Wellness, LOA, etc)  

  • Experience working with benefit brokers

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or professional certification (CEBS, CBP, or SHRM-SCP/PHR).

  • Experience working at a U.S. headquartered, publicly-traded company

  • Experience working at a health tech company

  • Experience using Workday

The pay ranges below are shown as a guideline, and the successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, and other relevant business and organizational factors. These pay zones may be modified in the future. Please contact your recruiter for additional information.

San Francisco and Seattle Offices:

$218,000.00 - $350,000.00

New York Office:

$200,000.00 - $321,000.00

Santa Monica Office:

$182,000.00 - $292,000.00

Other Office Locations:

$164,000.00 - $263,000.00
