In this role, you will report to the Director of R&D and work closely with R&D, Operations, and the Finished Goods Buyer to maintain a strategic inventory of raw materials at the lab and production sites. The Raw Materials Buyer is responsible for procuring packaged raw materials, bulk chemical materials, and lab equipment, supplies, or services. This role coordinates purchases from direct manufacturers or vendors and is accountable for ensuring specific operational needs are met, taking into account quality, price, expediency of delivery, and continuity of supply.

 

Responsibilities Include:

Source & Manage Suppliers:

  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with partners, suppliers, distributors, and manufacturers
  • Lead negotiations to achieve favorable terms and lead times while ensuring compliance with all legal and ethical standards (TSCA, REACH, Haz-Mat, CITES, etc.)
  • Review and plan raw materials forecasting and usage and ensure supplier understanding of PO requirements for long-term product availability
  • Prepare and submit the documentation required to establish credit terms with vendors and contractors
  • Monitor and track the quality of service provided and supplier performance, driving improvements in timely delivery, quality conformance, and compliance

Order & Manage Raw Materials:

  • Procure raw materials, equipment, supplies, and services as directed
  • Compose POs, verify availability, coordinate delivery dates, monitor shipments and back orders, expedite deliveries, and communicate status and ETAs to the team and partners to support target production dates
  • Maintain and update procurement data in the ERP system, including adding vendors as needed
  • Ensure sufficient stocked quantities are maintained at the lab and production sites to achieve product development and production demands
  • Assess the life of inventory (regular, aging, excess, EOL, etc.) and prepare reports to upper management regularly

Strategic Project Management:

  • Support global strategic sourcing using best-in-class project management methodologies
  • Maintain cross-functional communication to ensure awareness of raw material additions, changes in specifications, and supplier changes
  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities
  • Suggest improved ways of working, introducing new processes or re-engineering existing ones in support of key priorities

Administration:

  • Resolve vendor returns, cost recovery, and replacements
  • Handle AP inquiries, including invoice questions
  • Support R&D team to onboard and approve new raw materials and suppliers
 

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, engineering, or similar field; or a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in procurement
  • Demonstrated experience buying domestically and internationally, including knowledge of buying strategies, supplier relations, and cost control
  • Demonstrated experience in demand forecasting techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as material masters, specifications, COAs, SDSs, and other vendor certificates
  • Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to work with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals to accurately produce inventory forecasts
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills to secure favorable terms and foster collaboration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to analyze and present findings in a clear and cohesive manner to senior stakeholders
  • Process-oriented with a strong drive for continuous improvement
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
 

General Requirements & Employment Details:

  • Employment Eligibility: must have current US work authorization
  • Verbal & Written English Fluency: full business language fluency, including correct spelling and grammar, is required; Korean/English Bilingual a plus
  • Technology Acumen: competency with GSuite and/or Microsoft applications (Sheets/Excel, Word/Docs, Slides/Powerpoint, etc.); previous experience with Netsuite ERP is a plus.
  • Work Model: This is intended to be a full-time on-site position reporting to our Philadelphia, PA lab; hybrid employment may be considered depending on experience.
  • Physical abilities: Including but not limited to the ability to lift 50 pounds to your waist, 25 pounds to head height, and able to climb 10 stairs.
  • Travel: 1-4 times per year, if needed
