Job Description

The Technical Specialist, Gender will contribute to technical leadership for World Vision Canada’s (WVC) work in Gender. The position will focus on providing gender technical support for the implementation of several projects both grant, and major donor funded. The role will also contribute to expanding World Vision Canada’s programming in Gender and will play a critical role in developing, growing and supporting World Vision Canada’s capacity and expertise in gender mainstreaming and gender transformative programming, through strategically developing, strengthening and supporting comprehensive gender equality strategies and action plans within the grants portfolio; showcasing impact of our gender equality work;  and underpinning gender advocacy efforts and policy influence with a results based management framework. The position represents World Vision Canada internally and externally, working collaboratively with the other Programs & Policy technical specialists as well as other World Vision Canada departments and the larger World Vision partnership.

The Gender Technical Specialist will be staffed within the Technical Excellence, Programs and Policy Division and will report to the People Leader, Technical Excellence . The Gender Specialist will also be part of the Gender Team within Technical Excellence and guided by a Functional Gender Technical Lead . This position will work collaboratively with the Gender Team, Technical Specialists, and program staff within Programs & Policy, as well as other colleagues at WVC. The Gender Technical Specialist will also interface with staff from in-country field teams.

The position is a remote position based anywhere in Canada with some overseas travel as needed .

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide gender technical support to programs in both development and humanitarian/ emergency contexts to ensure gender mainstreaming. This support includes guidance on the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of programs, through ongoing correspondence with field partners, review of reports and regular field visits.
  • The position will provide gender technical support for project implementation including gender capacity assessment and training for project staff and partner s, as driven by donor and field needs.
  • The position will also support the robust monitoring of gender responsiveness of our project implementation and coordinate operational research and learning for the projects ensuring our reporting to the donor meets desired expectations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of research findings, standards, and guidelines for g ender programming to inform project implementation through accessing relevant state-of-the-art approaches, innovations and good practice benchmarks and sharing these with WVC and its partners.
  • Represent World Vision Canada’s) g ender priorities within projects to external agencies through correspondence, dissemination of assessment findings and lessons learned, and participation in professional conferences and networks.
  • Use project results to c ontribut e to thought leadership in the sector through publications, policy discourse .
  • Investigate and pursue opportunities to increase the quality of WVC’s g ender programming in existing and new opportunities in collaboration with field partners and WVC colleagues , including support for donor pre-positioning.
  • Identify and generate ideas from project implementation for concept papers and proposals in participatory process es with field partners for presentation to donors.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate should possess a Master’s degree in Gender and Development studies, or related gender-focused discipline, with at least 3- 5 years international experience in gender equality programming, or an undergraduate degree in Gender Studies with at least 5 years international experience in gender programming .
  • A minimum of 3-5 five years' experience developing, leading, and managing complex, large scale Gender initiatives .
  • Experience in Gender programming in the international development context both in development and h umanitarian/ e mergency contexts
  • Experience in policy influence and g ender policy development  
  • E xcellent facilitation and interpersonal skills, strong negotiation, diplomacy and leadership skills and commitment to teamwork
  • Demonstrated experience in gender program documentation, program monitoring, donor report writing, networking, and partner development for resource acquisition.
  • Experience working in cross-functional and remote teams for program implementation and technical standards development.
  • T echnical expertise in GBA+ analysis, gender mainstreaming, and gender-transformative planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Strong analytical skills for synthesis of materials, evaluations, and preparation of presentations/articles for publication, experience in a PC environment and the MS Office suite of software.
  • Experience integrating gender transformative approaches into health and nutrition programming is an asset.
  • Experience in the development or implementation of Feminist Monitoring and Evaluation processes and systems is an asset.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • French and/or Spanish language ability highly desirable for this position.
  • Availability for international and domestic travel 2 -3 times per year as needed.
