Job description

The HPC Build Engineer is responsible for the design, assembly, and configuration of high-performance computing (HPC) systems to meet the specific requirements of researchers, scientists, and computational workloads. This role involves selecting and integrating the appropriate hardware and software components, as well as thoroughly testing and optimizing the HPC systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware Selection: Analyze client requirements and recommend the most suitable HPC hardware components, including CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, interconnects, and cooling solutions.
  • System Design: Design and architect HPC systems that optimize performance, scalability, and energy efficiency based on the client's computational needs.
  • System Assembly: Assemble and configure HPC systems, including the installation and integration of all hardware components, following industry best practices and safety protocols.
  • Software Integration: Install and configure the necessary operating systems, drivers, and software applications on the HPC systems, ensuring compatibility and optimal performance.
  • Benchmarking and Testing: Conduct comprehensive benchmarking tests to evaluate the performance, power efficiency, and thermal characteristics of the HPC systems, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Troubleshooting and Optimization: Diagnose and resolve any hardware or software issues that arise during the build process, and implement optimizations to improve the overall system performance.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of the HPC system designs, components used, software configurations, and benchmarking results.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and adhere to strict quality control standards to deliver high-quality HPC systems that meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Client Collaboration: Work closely with clients to understand their requirements, provide technical guidance, and ensure a positive overall experience.
  • Professional Development: Stay up-to-date with the latest HPC hardware and software technologies, and continuously improve the HPC build processes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in designing, assembling, and configuring high-performance computing systems
  • Proficient in selecting and integrating HPC hardware components, including CPUs, GPUs, memory, storage, and interconnects
  • Strong knowledge of HPC software stacks, including operating systems, drivers, and specialized applications
  • Expertise in conducting comprehensive benchmarking tests and analyzing performance data
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to optimize system performance
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with clients and cross-functional teams
  • Certifications in HPC, such as NVIDIA Certified HPC Specialist or Intel Xeon Scalable Processors Certified, are preferred
  • Ability to stay up-to-date with the latest HPC technology trends and advancements

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in a laboratory or workshop setting
  • May require occasional travel to support HPC installations or attend industry events
  • Ability to lift and move heavy computer components, as well as work in a team environment
