About GiveDirectly

GiveDirectly (GD) provides cash grants directly to people living in extreme poverty. Since launching in 2011, GD has raised over $1B, delivered cash to more than 1.5 million recipients, launched operations in 15 countries, and continues to expand its reach across the Global South. GD has also grown the research base supporting unconditional cash with 20 randomized control trials from its programs, generating rigorous evidence across countries and contexts. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.

Across our global offices, our culture is candid, analytical, non-hierarchical, and agile. We work alongside 750+ individuals who come from 21 different countries and speak 69 different languages. Team members at GiveDirectly attest that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just buzzwords, but a fundamental part of our culture and values. We actively seek to recruit individuals from the communities we serve, and use DEI as a lens in our hiring practices, programs, and initiatives. Our goal is to maintain a workplace where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work, and feel valued and respected for who they are. We strive to be inclusive of all cultures and experiences while upholding our values globally. In the spirit of our "Know Yourself and Grow" value, we recognize there is always room to improve our team's working experience. But day to day, we aim to "Create Positive Energy" - we take care of one another, have fun, aim to maximize flexibility and accessibility in roles, and pursue professional development opportunities to stay challenged & engaged in our work.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by law.

About this role

Since late 2022, GiveDirectly has been working closely with the government’s a2i program to utilize machine learning and phone data to improve the targeting of humanitarian aid in Bangladesh. With funding from USAID and Google.org and technical assistance from the University of California Berkeley’s Centre for Effective Global Action (CEGA), we have remotely identified vulnerable Rohingya refugee hosts and impacted communities and delivered cash transfers through mobile money. This transformational approach predicts the poverty status of individual mobile phone users based on their patterns of phone usage

We have also recently launched an innovative climate crisis-responsive cash project to address key questions relevant to anticipatory action efforts globally in partnership with Google Flood Forecasting Initiative and researchers from the University of Oxford and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development to generate further evidence on providing anticipatory vs. post-disaster cash assistance.

GiveDirectly is looking for a Program Coordinator in a contractual role until the end of the year (with the opportunity to extend depending on funding availability and performance) to manage the implementation of the pilot initiative in Bangladesh. They will work closely with the program partners and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth delivery of cash transfers to the targeted recipients. We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who is excited to work in a fast-paced environment.

Flexibility policy @GiveDirectly

Remote policy

At GiveDirectly, we value flexibility and giving staff the time and space to do what they need to maintain a work/life balance. To that end, we offer unlimited paid leave. We also moved our central support team to be "remote first" Flexibility – Our work at GiveDirectly can be intense, high stakes, and fast-paced. Because of this, it is important to us to enable team members to have the flexibility they need to care for themselves and their families. “Remote first” allows team members to better maintain and maximize their self and family-care routines. Sustainability – We believe “remote first” will be more sustainable for the organization than our pre-COVID in-person work model, given 1) the model will allow us to grow our office spaces more gradually over time, even as we hire on more new team members, and 2) we expect the benefits of “remote first” to increase retention of our team members (cutting down on costs of turnover and hiring).

Remote onboarding at GiveDirectly

Moving forward, GiveDirectly will be “remote first” for central support team members – that is, team members who serve the organization as a whole, like our Research Team, Data Team, and Growth Team. The new policy allows these team members to work from anywhere, assuming they are legally authorized to do so and there are no circumstances of the role that require them to be located in a specific place. The policy assumes remote as the default, but for those who prefer to come into an office, that option will be available in cities where we have more than 5 team members. To facilitate connection and deepen bonds in a “remote first” model, team members will spend ~1 week per quarter in-person with their immediate team for planning and reflection. Culture – Over the past year of remote work, we’ve proven the ability to maintain and evolve our organizational culture even while nearly doubling the size of our central support team during COVID. That said, we do believe opportunities to connect, build trust, and deepen relationships are decreased in a fully remote model, which is why we’re requiring quarterly meet-ups. Productivity – We want team members to feel that the time they spend working is as productive as possible. All indications show that remote work during COVID has not decreased productivity at GiveDirectly, so we expect that “remote first” will continue to enable team members to maximize productivity. We’re continuing to check-in on team members’ engagement via regular surveys.
