Senior Software Engineer (Agentic AI & Agentic Engineering)

Role overview

Summary

This role focuses on building and enhancing the Kipu Quantum Hub, integrating agentic AI into the platform. You will collaborate with quantum physicists and data scientists to improve software engineering practices and deliver reliable AI agents, contributing to the intersection of generative AI and quantum computing.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally building cloud-based products.
  • A degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong skills in at least one of the main languages (Java, TypeScript, Python) and willingness to work across the stack.
  • Excellent English and German skills.
  • Preferred: Experience with containers and a major cloud provider; Kubernetes

Responsibilities

  • Build the platform end to end by designing, building, and running backend services, APIs, and frontends of the Kipu Quantum Hub.
  • Make architecture decisions for distributed systems, including microservices and API design.
  • Help ship small changes to production frequently and safely with good automated tests and CI/CD.
  • Develop agents in the product and ensure their reliability through evaluations, monitoring, and cost control.

Kipu Quantum

  • Startup
  • 11–50
Kipu Quantum is a German quantum computing startup based in Karlsruhe and Berlin. We meet customer needs by tackling real-world problems for a variety of business domains. What makes Kipu unique is our focus on application- and hardware-specific quantum algorithms that are packaged into software products. Kipu operates at the nexus of customer use cases, hardware platforms, and the software layer - because quantum computers are still more than 10 years away from solving meaningful problems with standard approaches. We intend to drastically reduce the time to useful quantum computing - our solutions enable customers to derive value from quantum computing years ahead of other approaches, i.e. not just in the distant future.

Job description

Your role

On the Kipu Quantum Hub, customers build quantum solutions for optimization and machine learning and run them on real hardware, with algorithms, REST APIs and SDKs from a single source.
AI agents are at the heart of our product. Tinkuq, the matchmaker, tells users honestly whether quantum computing is worth it for their problem. Paqari, our agentic platform, then helps to engineer the approach. It helps to writes and runs the code, and builds the complete quantum-classical solution as a service in the Hub runtime.

We are looking for an experienced software engineer who builds cloud-native systems end to end and brings deep expertise in agentic AI. You will work across the Kipu Quantum Hub, from backend services and APIs to frontend and infrastructure, with a clear focus on the agents at the core of our product and on how we use agents to build software ourselves.

You care about maintainable, tested and observable software, short feedback loops and real user value. You know that agents only deliver reliably when the engineering around them is right: clean architecture, good tests, clear specs and fast delivery.

Your responsibilities

  • Build the platform end to end: Design, build and run backend services, APIs and frontends of the Kipu Quantum Hub in a cloud-native architecture on Kubernetes in the public cloud.
  • Shape the architecture:Make architecture decisions for distributed systems, including microservices, asynchronous messaging and API design, and keep the system easy to change.
  • Raise the engineering bar: Help us ship small changes to production frequently and safely, with good automated tests and CI/CD.
  • Agentic AI focus - product: Develop the agents in our product and make them reliable with evals, monitoring and cost control.
  • Agentic AI focus - integration: Build the interfaces (e.g. MCP) that let LLMs work safely with our APIs, quantum services and hardware backends.
  • Agentic engineering focus - how we build: Help us make AI coding agents a productive, reliable part of how the team builds software.
  • Collaborate across disciplines: Work closely with quantum physicists and data scientists and help the whole team grow through pairing and feedback.

Your profile

Software engineering

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally building cloud-based products.
  • A degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong skills in at least one of our main languages (Java, TypeScript, Python) and willingness to work across the stack.
  • Experience with containers and a major cloud provider; Kubernetes is a plus.
  • A good understanding of software architecture and API design.
  • A strong focus on code quality, automated testing and continuous delivery.
  • Excellent English and German skills.
Agentic expertise
  • Experience building LLM-based applications, for example with RAG, tool use or an agent framework.
  • You use AI coding agents in your daily work and have a feel for where they help and where they need guardrails.
Nice to have
  • Experience with the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • Experience evaluating LLM or agent quality.
  • Some exposure to quantum computing or other deep-tech and research environments. Quantum knowledge is not a must, curiosity about it is.

Why join us?

  • A senior engineering role at the intersection of generative AI and quantum computing, with plenty of room to shape our architecture, our engineering practices and our agents.
  • Collaboration with quantum physicists, algorithm teams and hardware partners worldwide, in a team that values short feedback loops, ownership and real user value.
  • A role with real ownership.
  • Flexible working hours and the option to work remotely.
  • An international team based in Berlin and remotely.
  • Contributions toward public transport or shopping vouchers.
  • 30 vacation days.
