Job description

About Moby

Moby is changing the way people invest. We use AI to transform the world's financial data and research into clear, actionable insights that anyone can understand. What started as a consumer research product is now three businesses in one: a subscription app used by tens of thousands of paid subscribers, a media platform reaching 30M+ people every month, and a fast-growing B2B API business powering research and AI experiences inside major brokerages and financial platforms. We're profitable-minded, growing 3x year over year, and just getting started.

The Role - Someone Who Reads The 10-K Footnotes First

We need a Research Editor to put Moby's AI-driven research into the distinctly human Moby voice of your funniest friend in finance who likes to explain his thoughts on markets in a loud bar.

You'll work with our head of research and our head of content to take what our models find and shape it into pieces readers finish, with every number still standing at the end. One week that means pumping out three stock picks and a new portfolio, or checking a psychedelics thesis against the actual clinical trial calendar. The next it means confirming that all 30 names in a rebalanced transport portfolio belong in the 6 pillars we sorted them into, and that every figure in the memo matches the filing it came from.

You'll also help us dream up and build the research behind our picks, portfolios, and news stories. When a company reports, or a market moves, you'll be the one asking what our research says about it, then pulling the numbers that let a Moby news piece say something that only we can.

What You'll Do

  • Turn Moby's AI-driven research into copy in the Moby voice, working with our head of research and head of content from the first draft to the final read.

  • Edit stock picks, portfolio memos, earnings recaps, and daily previews for structure, argument, and voice.

  • Pitch and build the investment research and data behind our news stories, from the story idea to the number that anchors it.

  • Pressure-test the thesis. Our stock picks lead with our own price target and conviction, and you'll make sure the argument holding them up can survive a skeptical reader.

  • Contribute to our newsdesk with ideas for data stories, and adding data elements to existing stories, giving Moby’s subscribers yet another level of analysis to make them smarter and more successful.

  • Help build and maintain the style guide, checklists, and editing tools that make all of this repeatable.

Who We’re Looking For

Moby hires for obsession. We want people who love investment research as much as they love writing about it, wherever they picked up the habit. You might be a financial reporter looking for a new challenge, or a Wall Street analyst ready to show the world the personality that compliance kept out of your research notes. Some experience in a related field is required, and we mean related pretty broadly.

  • 2+ years of editing, reporting, research, or analysis on financial, business, or markets work, at a publication, research shop, newsletter, bank, or fund.

  • You can read an income statement, a balance sheet, and a cash flow statement, and you know which one a struggling company hopes you skip.

  • You know what a 10-K, a 10-Q, an 8-K, and a proxy statement are for, and where in each one the interesting stuff tends to hide.

  • You can take a dense piece of research and make it readable while every number in it stays right.

  • You're curious enough to go looking for the data point a story is missing, and stubborn enough to find it.

  • Your edit notes are clear, specific, and kind enough that analysts are glad to send you the next draft.

Bonus Points

  • You've written for a finance publication or an investment bank.

  • You have a distinctive writing voice that you want to hone and share.

  • You can spot a sentence that a machine wrote from across the room, and you know how to fix it.

  • You're at home in a spreadsheet and can check an analyst's multiples or DCF math without asking them to walk you through it.

  • You already have opinions about equities, commodities, psychedelics stocks, freight rail, or the companies that sell toothpaste no matter what the economy is doing.

The Details

  • Location: NYC metro strongly preferred (hybrid); open to remote within US time zones for an exceptional candidate for the perfect fit

  • Type: Full-time

  • Reports to: Head of Content

  • Works with: Head of Content and Head of Research

  • Salary: $95k to $115k, plus benefits
