Job description

As a Senior Data Scientist on Foley's Value Creation Office (VCO) team, you will lead Foley's research process alongside our Chief AI Officer. You will find where the value is in Foley's data, prove it, and help turn it into models, product features, and new offerings that ship.

This role is consulting-adjacent. You will work with leaders across the business to frame the right questions, and with our ML engineers and data engineers to give leadership a forward-looking view of the business rather than a backward-looking report. Foley holds years of driver records, compliance events, violations, screening results, and customer data, and there is significant opportunity to put that data to work. Exceptional communication and strong business analytics are central to this role.

What you'll do

  • Lead the research process: Partner with our Chief AI Officer to set the research agenda, decide which questions are worth answering, and run the process from hypothesis to evidence to recommendation.

  • Partner with the business: Work with leaders, customers, and subject matter experts to find where data science moves the business, such as driver risk, fraud and anomalies, retention, pricing, and compliance prediction. Size each opportunity, frame it, and make the case in plain language.

  • Build a forward-looking view of the business: Work with ML engineers and data engineers to develop forecasts, leading indicators, and models that help leadership see where the business is heading and act earlier.

  • Apply rigorous methods: Learn how Foley's data is created before trusting it. Lead EDA, build and test hypothesis trees, engineer domain-driven features, and build production-ready models. Validate with holdouts, leakage checks, calibration, error analysis, and bias and fairness review.

  • Treat data as a strategic asset: Size the value of Foley's data, identify gaps worth closing, evaluate external data to buy or license, and help shape and price data products.

  • Communicate and take insights to product: Explain to executives, customers, and engineers what a model does, what it does not do, and how confident we are in it. Turn findings into product proposals and define success metrics before launch.

Who you are

  • Senior-level, end-to-end data science experience: EDA, hypothesis development, feature engineering, modeling, and validation

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, including presenting findings and recommendations to executives and non-technical audiences

  • Strong business analytics skills: you can look at a business and a dataset, see where analysis would change a decision, and size the opportunity

  • Consulting or consulting-adjacent experience, such as strategy, operations, PE value creation, due diligence, or an internal strategy or analytics team, including leading a research or analytics process from framing the question to delivering a recommendation

  • Strong statistics, including recognizing noise, leakage, and confounding, and communicating uncertainty clearly

  • Fluency in Python and SQL, and experience partnering with engineering to ship models to production

You might thrive in this role if you also have:

  • Experience in transportation, logistics, or fleet, such as trucking, DOT/FMCSA, insurance, or safety

  • Experience in regtech or compliance, such as background screening, FCRA, drug testing, or other regulated data

  • Experience with forecasting, scenario planning, or leading-indicator work used by an executive team

  • Experience turning a model or analysis into a product customers pay for

  • Experience with data sourcing, licensing, partnerships, pricing, or data product strategy

  • Experience with graph data, entity resolution, or text and document data with LLMs
