Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Controller to own Rho's accounting operations. Reporting to the VP of Finance, you will run the close, safeguard the integrity of our financial statements, lead tax and audit readiness, and build the processes, controls, and systems a fast-growing, multi-channel CPG business needs.
This is a working leader role: you will set direction for the accounting function and coach a small team, while staying close enough to the detail to review reconciliations, post entries, and solve problems yourself. You will also be a trusted business partner to Operations, Sales, and Leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Close & Financial Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, with a target of closing within three business days.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaids, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Deliver accurate, GAAP-compliant monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
- Maintain general ledger integrity through regular balance sheet reviews and account analyses.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and technical accounting guidance.
Revenue, Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Reconcile revenue and COGS across Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, wholesale distributors, and retail in accordance with ASC 606.
- Own inventory and cost accounting, including inventory balances, adjustments, and COGS reconciliations.
- Ensure accurate accounting for customer deductions, rebates, promotional allowances, and chargebacks.
Accounts Payable, Receivable & Payroll
- Oversee AP and AR, including wholesale invoicing, collections, vendor onboarding, W-9/W-8 collection, and annual 1099 reporting.
- Review weekly AR aging and work with customers to resolve payment disputes, deductions, and chargebacks.
- Oversee semi-monthly payroll in Rippling and review payroll reports for accuracy and compliance.
Tax Compliance
- Own multi-state sales tax compliance: review filings prepared through Numeral, upload monthly.
- Partner with external advisors on federal, state, and local income tax compliance and planning.
- Prepare tax schedules and documentation, and track and resolve tax notices.
Audit & Internal Controls
- Serve as the primary accounting contact for external auditors and lead audit preparation, schedules, and requests.
- Design, document, and maintain internal controls that keep pace with the company's growth.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Lead implementation of an ERP as we scale beyond QuickBooks Online, then drive its ongoing optimization.
- Identify and deliver automation and process improvements that increase speed, accuracy, and scalability.
Leadership & Partnership
- Supervise, train, and develop junior accountants handling bank and credit card reconciliations, payment applications, and daily accounting.
- Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with Operations, Sales, and Leadership on projects that improve financial visibility and operational efficiency.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a CPG, food & beverage, dietary supplement, manufacturing, or e-commerce environment.
- 3+ years of experience leading or supervising accounting staff.
- Experience managing the full accounting cycle for a business selling across DTC, Amazon, wholesale, and retail channels.
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, ASC 606 revenue recognition, inventory accounting, and cost accounting.
- Hands-on experience owning the month-end close and building scalable accounting processes.
- Experience with sales tax compliance and supporting income tax reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, data analysis).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Comfort in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with shifting priorities.
- Active CPA strongly preferred.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online, Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, Rippling, and sales tax platforms such as Numeral.
- Experience leading an ERP selection or implementation.
- Experience with retail chargebacks and deductions.
Compensation & Benefits- Base salary of $145,000–$175,000, based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k).
- Paid time off, paid holidays, and paid family leave.
