Job description

Company Description

AFRY is a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, supporting clients in accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable society. With a global network of experts across infrastructure, industry, energy, and digitalisation, AFRY delivers innovative and sustainable solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle.

As part of our continued growth in Thailand and Southeast Asia, AFRY is expanding its hydropower engineering capabilities to support a growing portfolio of dam, hydropower, and renewable energy infrastructure projects.

We are currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our Hydropower team in Bangkok. The successful candidate will provide geotechnical engineering support across various project stages, from site investigations and design development through to construction, with a focus on foundations, slope stability, underground works, seepage assessments, and ground improvement.

The role will work closely with senior engineers, engineering geologists, and multidisciplinary project teams to assess ground conditions, identify geotechnical risks, and develop practical and sustainable engineering solutions. This position also offers opportunities for professional development and career progression within AFRY's international hydropower engineering team.

Job Description

  • Assist in planning and interpreting geological and geotechnical investigations, including borehole logging, rock core assessment, rock mass classification, groundwater evaluation, and identification of geological hazards.
  • Assess soil and rock conditions and provide geotechnical input for dam foundations, tunnels, underground caverns, powerhouses, slopes, and excavations.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses and support design assessments, including bearing capacity, foundation stability, settlement, slope stability, groundwater, seepage, and ground improvement.
  • Support foundation treatment and ground improvement works, including consolidation grouting, curtain grouting, and seepage control measures.
  • Provide site support during excavation, tunnelling, and foundation preparation, documenting actual ground conditions and identifying deviations from design assumptions.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing technical reports, including Geological Factual Reports (GFR), Geological Interpretative Reports (GIR), Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR), investigation reports, and design documentation.
  • Coordinate with senior engineers, geologists, contractors, drilling teams, and investigation consultants to integrate geotechnical information into design and construction activities.
  • Identify potential geotechnical hazards, evaluate risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Prepare technical calculations, drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Follow project HSE requirements, site safety procedures, and applicable legislation, and participate in risk assessments and construction safety activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geotechnology, Engineering Geology, or a related field.
  • Approximately 4-6 years of relevant professional experience in geotechnical engineering, preferably in dams, hydropower, underground structures, tunnelling, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Candidates with less experience but relevant qualifications and a strong willingness to learn are also encouraged to apply.

  • Experience in geotechnical investigations, subsurface data interpretation, soil and rock mass characterization, and selection of geotechnical design parameters.
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical analysis and design, including foundation stability, bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, seepage, and ground improvement.
  • Familiarity with construction-stage geotechnical assessment, foundation preparation, excavation support, and identification of ground-related risks.
  • Knowledge of relevant geotechnical investigation and design standards. Experience in Southeast Asia or similar geological settings is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical analysis and modelling software such as PLAXIS, GeoStudio, and Leapfrog, as well as programming, coding, or AI-based tools for engineering analysis and data interpretation, is an advantage.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, report-writing, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to undertake site visits and project assignments as required, including coordination with construction teams and investigation consultants.
