  • Location: Remote for candidates in the US (unable to provide sponsorship)
  • Travel: Quarterly travel to HQ in Portland, OR + approximately two additional trips per year

What You’ll Do: In this role, you'll build and run the probabilistic models behind WRAP's Loss-of-Load-Expectation (LOLE) and Effective Load Carrying Capability (ELCC) studies in SERVM. You’ll not only run studies but help educate non-technical customers and stakeholders on the results through committee involvement, working groups, and stakeholder discussions. Your work helps set planning reserve margin requirements and the capacity value of energy and power, across the WRAP footprint.   A typical day may consist of:
  • Build, maintain, and run SERVM models for WRAP LOLE, ELCC, and related reliability studies
  • Develop and validate the load, weather, generation, storage, outage, hydro, renewable energy, and transmission data that power resource adequacy modeling
  • Check inputs, configurations, and outputs, investigate odd results, and document how you resolved them
  • Analyze large output datasets to find reliability risks, loss-of-load patterns, and the drivers behind study results
  • Write scripts and repeatable workflows for data processing, model runs, and visualization
  • Prepare technical reports, study documentation, and presentations for WRAP participants, committees, WPP leadership, and the board
  • Join technical discussions with participants, regulators, consultants, and other industry stakeholders, and give feedback that goes back into the stakeholder process
  • Follow developments in resource adequacy, capacity accreditation, and ISO and RTO practices, and help improve WRAP's modeling methods
Who You Are: You've built your career in resource adequacy or reliability modeling, and you know SERVM from the inside. You can build a model, run it, and explain the results to people who aren't engineers. You're comfortable running studies under a method WRAP members set through a stakeholder process, and you provide input when you see opportunities for improvement. You work well under deadlines and enjoy work that other people depend on.   Qualifications include:
  • Experience: Typically 3 to 6 years in resource adequacy, generation or transmission planning, integrated resource planning, power-system analysis, energy analytics, or electric markets
  • SERVM: Recent, hands-on experience building, running, and analyzing SERVM models, including LOLE and ELCC studies
  • Technical foundation: Working knowledge of electric power systems and resource planning, including load forecasting, renewables, storage, forced outages, and planning reserve margins; experience with probabilistic modeling and large datasets
  • Tools: Python, SQL, R, MATLAB, or Excel for data processing and analysis
  • Communication: Clear writer and presenter who can explain technical results to non-technical audiences
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related quantitative field
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of resource adequacy practices in the Western Interconnect, or experience at WRAP, an ISO or RTO, or a utility   Who We Are: Western Power Pool (WPP) is a non-profit organization that helps keep the lights on by ensuring power utilities in the West achieve maximum benefits from coordinated operations.
