When our founder, James Graham, was searching for a telephone for his grandmother, he couldn’t find a phone company that valued its customers, was easy to use, and didn’t lock people into long contracts. Spending some time with her inspired him to create Community Phone! We treat customers differently - we don’t sell user data, leak numbers to spam bots, and we don’t nickel and dime with hidden fees and confusing contracts. In 2020, the onset of the pandemic brought a pivot to our company. Community Phone went straight to its customers. Their message was loud and clear: they needed a reliable, customer-friendly landline service. Something trustworthy and refreshingly simple. And that started our next chapter. We have grown to a 70+ person remote-first team and continue to expand. Join us in our mission to put the power of the phone back into the hands of the people!

Job description

☎ Community Phone

Community Phone is building the best phone for communities in America. We are your hair salon’s business phone, how your auto-body shop texts you or gets appointments, your local government agency’s operations line, and your mom’s phone that she sometimes answers on her computer. We have more than 20,000 customers today, and are building the missing phone.

Our team is ~80 people strong, across 15 countries. We are growing quickly, backed by Y Combinator Accelerator and Y Combinator’s Continuity Fund. We are customer-obsessed to the core. When we had a major network outage, everyone from recruiters to engineers to marketers to customer support agents got on the phone with our customers. Our team exemplifies our purpose. Join us on our mission to make it as easy as possible for communities to communicate.

🌟 About the role

As our Product Engineer, you will be a key leader on our engineering team. You will focus on scaling our products so we’re in a position to support 100,000+ customers (and beyond). You will grow to become an owner of one or two high-level outcomes (e.g. reducing support tickets, app usage and growth, phone service availability).

Our stack

Typescript/Javascript, React, Next.js, Go

🚀 You will...

  • Participate in designing the best product for our customers, being an active voice in the decision of what to build and why, rather than receiving already-polished tickets
  • Follow best practices, including accompanying (nearly) every PR with tests
  • Build, and deploy features end-to-end making a significant impact on our company goals and our product
  • Own key product metrics, like % of customers who take a certain action within the app
  • Support your team by participating in thoughtful code reviews and feedback sessions

🏆  You are...

  • Experienced with 6+ years of software engineering experience, with a particular focus on usability, front-end, product design, and information architecture
  • Well-versed across the stack from using Typescript to Python and/or Go
  • Collaborative and enjoy working with multiple teams
  • An Excellent Communicator with native or close to-native English skills
  • Results-driven and enjoy a fast-paced environment. Startup experience is necessary
  • Passionate About Learning open to new domains or technology; you're willing to dive into documentation/videos, talk to your teammates, and experiment to become well-versed
