The position partners with Software Development, QA, Infrastructure, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, Business Intelligence, and vendors, taking a prevention-first approach to protecting PHI and the organization's data.

Roles:

  • Primary technical owner and escalation point for all production and non-production databases and data stores, on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Lead database architecture, design standards, and Azure migration strategy in alignment with enterprise architecture.
  • Primary database partner to application development, QA, and Business Intelligence teams.
  • Proactively identify and resolve performance, capacity, security, and stability risks before they become incidents.

Major Responsibilities or Assigned Duties:

On-prem SQL Server Operations & Decommissioning

  • Administer, patch, secure, and support on-premises SQL Server (SQL Agent, SSIS, linked servers), keeping it stable through the transition.
  • Inventory databases, dependencies, and data flows to sequence migration; decommission servers once workloads move.

Azure Cloud Database Architecture & Migration

  • Lead design of the Azure transactional environment (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, SQL on Azure VMs), including tiers, sizing, HA, networking, and security, through the architecture review process.
  • Oversee the on-prem to Azure migration from assessment through cutover, validation, and rollback; manage consumption and cost.

Multi-Platform Data Environment

  • Support database workloads hosted on various cloud platforms (e.g., Cloud SQL, BigQuery, PostgreSQL) with consistent standards.
  • Advise on the move to Microsoft Fabric, including source design, data movement, and integration with the Lakehouse and warehouse.

NoSQL and Document Platforms

  • Administer and support NoSQL and document databases (e.g., Azure Cosmos DB, MongoDB), including partition/shard key design, indexing policies, consistency levels, throughput and cost management, and backup/restore.
  • Partner with Development and Infrastructure on data integrity and consistency across relational and NoSQL/document databases, including idempotency and retry patterns.
  • Extend monitoring, alerting, PHI protection, auditing, and backup/DR standards to NoSQL and document databases.

Proactive Monitoring, Security & Continuity

  • Maintain monitoring, alerting, health checks, and performance baselines; tune queries and indexes and drive root cause analysis.
  • Configure auditing to Information Security's SIEM; design and test backup, HA, and DR to RPO/RTO targets; support audits (e.g., HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, URAC).

Application Development, BI & QA Partnership

  • Partner with developers and BI on data modeling, schema design, and query patterns; review database code and changes before release.
  • Guide QA on database testing standards (integrity, regression, load, performance), with QA retaining ownership of test strategy.
  • Partner with QA on database acceptance criteria, masked test data, unit testing, and defect triage.
  • Manage database change control and deployments across environments under the IT change management process.

Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish database standards, runbooks, and documentation; automate routine tasks; advise on licensing and emerging tools.
