Job description

Senior Systems Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the design, scalability, and reliability of our internal healthcare application platform. This role owns Kubernetes platform standards, CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) strategy, operational excellence, and cost optimization. The role also mentors engineers and partners with development and leadership teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, own, and evolve the Kubernetes platform architecture for healthcare applications, including cluster strategy, upgrades, and multi-environment standards.
  • Define and enforce standardized deployment patterns using Helm, Kustomize, and GitOps (e.g., Argo CD or Flux).
  • Architect enterprise CI/CD pipelines with built-in security scanning, quality gates, and release governance.
  • Lead IaC strategy with reusable Terraform modules, configuration management, and policy-as-code.
  • Establish observability standards, SLOs/SLIs, and alerting. Lead incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
  • Drive platform security and compliance (HIPAA, audit readiness, secrets management, RBAC, network policies, image hardening).
  • Own cloud cost governance (FinOps): rightsizing, autoscaling, reserved capacity, and cost reporting, with measurable savings.
  • Plan and test disaster recovery, backup, and high availability.
  • Mentor engineers, conduct design and code reviews, and author technical documentation and runbooks.
  • Partner with development, security, and leadership teams on the platform roadmap and technical decisions.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years in Systems Engineering, DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering, including 3+ years running Kubernetes in production.
  • Expert-level Kubernetes administration (AKS, EKS, or OpenShift), Docker, Kustomize and Helm.
  • Proven experience designing CI/CD at scale with Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, or Jenkins.
  • Advanced Terraform skills (module design, state management) plus Ansible or similar tools.
  • Strong scripting and automation in PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Deep Azure experience (networking, identity, security, cost management); multi-cloud is a plus.
  • Hands-on observability experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Azure Monitor, or ELK.
  • Track record of leading production incidents and delivering reliability improvements.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in healthcare or other regulated environments (HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2).
  • GitOps, service mesh (Istio or Linkerd), and policy engines (OPA/Gatekeeper or Kyverno).
  • FinOps practices and cloud cost tooling (Kubecost, Azure Cost Management).
  • Relevant certifications: CKA/CKS, Azure Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer, Terraform Associate.

What Success Looks Like

  • A standardized, self-service Kubernetes platform adopted across application teams.
  • Defined SLOs met consistently, with reduced incident frequency and faster recovery (MTTR).
  • Majority of infrastructure and deployments fully automated through IaC and GitOps.
  • Audit-ready platform security and compliance posture.
  • Documented, measurable infrastructure cost savings.
  • Stronger team capability through mentoring, standards, and documentation.
