Job description

CFO & Business Advisor | VP of Finance | Director of Finance | 100% Remote | W-2

Job description:

Company: How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM)
Employment: Full-Time | W-2 Employee with Benefits
Compensation: $110,000 Base + Incremental Compensation | Targeted Total Compensation: $160,000 – $182,000
Location: Remote within AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA

ABOUT THE ROLE

HTM helps solo and small law firm owners build more profitable businesses. As our CFO & Business Advisor, you’ll be the financial leader and trusted advisor to about 30 law firm owners. Law firms are professional services businesses, where the people are the production engine. You’ll help owners improve pricing, margins, cash flow, and profitability, and make smarter decisions about hiring and growth.

HTM provides a portfolio of potential clients, systems, and infrastructure. No cold calling or prospecting. This is a full-time W-2 position, not a 1099 or independent practice.

You’ll work at a higher level. You won’t be managing bookkeepers or accounting staff, or proposing journal entries. If you’re tired of the accounting weeds, this is the job for you.

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

You need 8+ years of finance leadership experience as a CFO, VP of Finance, Director of Finance, Director of FP&A, or similar, including managing multiple client relationships at once, or balancing multiple business lines, divisions, or geographies in an internal leadership role.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll personally review financials, build models and forecasts, and turn the numbers into practical advice. It is not a fit if your experience is mainly bookkeeping, month-end close, controllership, or managing a team without doing the analysis yourself.

Experience in professional services (consulting, engineering, accounting, architecture, technology, or similar) is a huge plus. Our clients’ businesses run on billable people, so you’ll speak in terms like utilization, realization, capacity, and revenue per head. If your background is only real estate, construction, or manufacturing, expect a learning curve.

Experience in a start-up or entrepreneur-heavy environment that grew fast, changed a lot, and had an innovative culture is a strong plus.

Profit First certification (such as Profit First Professional) is also a strong plus.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Serve as the financial leader and advisor for about 30 law firms
  • Lead discovery calls with prospective clients and build your reputation in the HTM community
  • Review financials, investigate discrepancies, and identify opportunities
  • Build models, budgets, forecasts, cash flow plans, and KPI dashboards
  • Advise on pricing, margins, hiring, and growth
  • Travel to U.S. events a couple of times a year for training and networking with your clients

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8+ years of finance leadership (see above)
  • A track record working directly with owners, founders, or senior leaders
  • Strong hands-on analysis, modeling, forecasting, and cash flow skills
  • Examples of improving profitability, pricing, or margins
  • Clear communication that turns financial concepts into practical advice
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent leadership experience
  • Profit First certification (a strong plus)
  • Willingness to complete a short, hands-on working session in the interview process
  • Legal experience is not required. We’ll teach you the law-firm specifics.

WHY JOIN HTM?

  • $110,000 base plus incremental compensation, with targeted total compensation of $160,000 – $182,000.
  • Full-time W-2 with benefits: medical, dental, and vision (75% paid by HTM), disability coverage, 401(k) match, unlimited PTO, paid Thanksgiving-week shutdown, plus one additional paid week off, EAP, pet and legal insurance, and professional development
  • A portfolio of potential clients provided, so no need to build your own practice
  • 100% remote
  • Inc. 5000 every year since 2013

Do the CFO work you love. We’ll provide the portfolio. Apply today!

Applicants must reside in one of the listed states and be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
