We named our agency after the kind of people who protested, crossed, and eventually tore down the Berlin wall to reunify their city. We believe that with creative ingenuity, some courage, and good planning, it’s possible to beat long odds and change the status quo. We don’t tear down walls made of concrete, but we do tear down metaphorical walls between our clients and their goals. We remove barriers that get in the way of connecting with your audiences, rallying your partners, and making your mark on the world. We don’t fear complexity or contention. These things are common features of most issues that matter, and we know how to handle them constructively.

Job description

JUNIOR OR INTERMEDIATE ART DIRECTOR

WHY BERLIN?

Berlin is an independent, owner-operated creative agency based in Edmonton, Alberta. We are a collective of mavericks, rebels, and disruptors using outlier thinking to help brands swerve big from routine. We're also Strategy Magazine Small Agency of the Year finalists three years running—the only agency in Alberta. It's a recognition we're honoured to hold as one of the best independent full-service advertising agencies in Canada.

In the past year, we’ve been one of the most awarded independent agencies in Western Canada—recognized by the Clio Awards, Communication Arts, Lurzers Archive, Ad & Design Club of Canada, and Applied Arts.

We’re seeking a junior or intermediate Art Director to join our crew. Applicants in Edmonton will be preferred, but we’re open to this being a remote position for someone living in Canada.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Have you ever boycotted a restaurant purely over their menu font choice?

Berlin is looking for an Art Director who can treat a client's "make it pop" request like a Sunday stroll through the park. Someone who can align pixel-perfect grids, kern like their dog’s life depends on it, and gently talk a copywriter down from a ledge when they discover the wrong use of the m-dash on line 3, all while pumping out a deck full of provocatively unhinged concepts.
🧠🤪 🧠🤔 🧠😏 🧠🫣

JK…kinda.

It's less kerning-induced panic and more creative collaboration. Funny people, good coffee, better than average snacks, and a genuinely fun team that actually respects your layered files.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create unexpected ideas and engaging visual solutions by collaborating with copywriters, strategists, and other visual artists.
  • Prepare and refine concepts for internal and client presentations.
  • Explain your ideas and thinking to Berliners and clients.
  • Bring concepts to life through design and visual expertise.
  • Juggle multiple projects with differing timelines across a wide range of media (including, but not limited to, video, social, print, outdoor, guerrilla, direct and digital).
  • Stay up-to-date on creativity in our industry.
  • Experiment with generative AI.

MUST HAVES FROM YOU:

  • A portfolio filled with concepts and design solutions that would make all other applicants angry at you.
  • At least one year of ad agency experience.
  • Understanding of generative AI's role in the creative process.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects) and Figma
  • An eagerness to be pushed from good to great.
  • A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and low ego—not everything will go your way.
  • A willingness to take ownership in organizing and maintaining creative files and assets.
  • The hunger to conceptualize provocative ideas that other creatives will dog-ear in their Communication Arts Annual.

MANDATORY NOTES:

  • Only applicants living in Canada will be considered.
  • Candidates are required to submit a link to their portfolio website with their application.
  • Only those with a portfolio website will be considered.
  • Please do not reach out to inquire about your applications.

Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

This position will remain open until filled.

Berlin is an equal opportunity employer. We believe diversity in lived experience brings tremendous value to our team, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
