Job description

Senior Technical Artist (Unity3D | Shaders & Tools)

Location: Remote | International Team

Employment: Full-Time / Long-Term

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Technical Artist with a strong understanding of real-time rendering, shaders, technical workflows, and game art production.

We believe great technical artists are creative problem-solvers. They understand artistic intent, recognize technical constraints, and develop elegant solutions that allow artists to produce exceptional results without compromising performance or production efficiency.

As part of our technical art team, you will work closely with artists, engineers, and creative leadership to develop shaders, improve workflows, troubleshoot technical challenges, and support the implementation of high-quality game art.

This is a senior, hands-on role with meaningful technical ownership and opportunities to contribute to both visual quality and production technology.

Key Responsibilities

Shaders & Real-Time Rendering

  • Develop and refine real-time shaders and materials that support the intended artistic direction.

  • Work with lighting, material properties, textures, transparency, and other rendering features.

  • Investigate rendering issues and develop practical technical solutions.

  • Collaborate with artists to achieve visually compelling results within target platform constraints.

  • Support the development and optimization of stylized rendering workflows.

Tools & Production Pipelines

  • Develop artist-friendly tools, scripts, validators, and workflow improvements.

  • Improve asset import, material setup, scene organization, and content validation.

  • Automate repetitive production tasks and reduce unnecessary manual work.

  • Collaborate with artists to identify recurring technical challenges and build reusable solutions.

  • Document tools and workflows to support consistency across teams.

Optimization & Technical Support

  • Profile and optimize real-time content, including geometry, materials, textures, shaders, and VFX.

  • Identify performance bottlenecks and work with engineers to resolve them.

  • Support platform-specific optimization requirements, including memory and GPU limitations.

  • Troubleshoot technical art issues and maintain reliable production workflows.

  • Help establish practical performance guidelines and technical quality standards.

Collaboration & Ownership

  • Collaborate with Art Directors, 3D Artists, VFX Artists, Lighting Artists, and Engineers.

  • Translate artistic goals into efficient and maintainable technical implementations.

  • Participate in technical reviews and contribute improvements to existing systems.

  • Proactively identify technical risks and opportunities for workflow improvement.

  • Take ownership of assigned technical art features from prototype to production.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a Technical Artist in game development.

  • Experience contributing to commercially released game productions.

  • Strong understanding of real-time rendering, materials, shaders, and graphics fundamentals.

  • Experience with Unity3D, or comparable real-time engines.

  • Practical experience with Shader Graph, HLSL, custom materials, or equivalent shader workflows.

  • Experience creating scripts, tools, or automation using Python, C#, or similar languages.

  • Strong understanding of game art pipelines, asset preparation, and in-engine implementation.

  • Familiarity with GPU and CPU profiling, optimization, and real-time performance constraints.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex artistic and technical issues.

  • Strong artistic judgment and understanding of the relationship between visual quality and technical limitations.

  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English.

Bonus Skills

  • Strong Unity URP/HDRP or rendering experience.

  • Experience developing shaders and tools for stylized games.

  • Knowledge of mobile GPU optimization, draw calls, overdraw, and memory budgets.

  • Experience with Houdini or procedural content generation.

  • Familiarity with technical animation, VFX, or character production pipelines.

  • Experience with compute shaders or GPU-driven rendering techniques.

  • Previous experience working in a co-development environment.

What We Offer

  • Meaningful technical ownership over shaders, tools, and production workflows.

  • Opportunity to solve challenging artistic and technical problems.

  • Collaboration with experienced Artists, Engineers, and Technical Leads.

  • Remote-friendly international working environment.

  • Competitive compensation and flexible contract options.

  • Long-term collaboration and opportunities for professional growth.

  • Annual Beffio team retreats and a supportive studio culture.
