Description

HealthCentral — New York / Remote

Position Summary

HealthCentral is a health experience company at the intersection of media and community. We translate clinical expertise into human understanding, pairing trusted medical insight with lived experience to create content, connections, and experiences that resonate in the real world.

We are seeking an Editor to help build and engage consumer health audiences by creating and editing useful, engaging content that helps people understand their health, explore their options, and take their next step with confidence. This role will focus on priority consumer conditions and audiences, combining medical expertise, practical guidance, and patient perspectives.

The Editor will edit, assign, and occasionally write and create content; manage freelance contributors; build and send newsletters; and maintain the accuracy and relevance of existing coverage. Working closely with colleagues across editorial, audience growth, social, newsletters, and multimedia, this person will help deliver stories in the formats and channels that best serve our audiences.

This is an opportunity for a thoughtful, collaborative editor to build lasting relationships with people navigating health conditions and decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Edit consumer health content that addresses specific audience needs, from recognizing symptoms and understanding a diagnosis to exploring treatment and managing everyday life.
  • Build coordinated content experiences across channels and formats, including web, newsletters, social, video, and audio, while integrating DROPS and MedFluencers where relevant to the consumer audience journey.
  • Translate complex medical information into clear, accessible, actionable guidance while preserving accuracy and nuance.
  • Incorporate patient voices and lived experience alongside clinical expertise, reflecting the questions and challenges people face.
  • Manage freelance writers and expert contributors, providing clear briefs, constructive feedback, and consistent quality standards.
  • Coordinate medical review, fact-checking, sourcing, and revisions to ensure content is credible, current, and useful.
  • Review and update existing content, identifying opportunities to improve coverage, fill gaps, and connect readers with helpful next steps.
  • Pitch, assign, and occasionally write consumer health content.
  • Contribute to shared editorial plans and monthly tentpoles, partnering with social, newsletter, video, and audio teams to develop stories across formats.
  • Use audience research, search insights, and performance data to inform assignments and improve engagement and repeat visitation.
  • Manage assignments, deadlines, and production costs using shared planning tools and efficient workflows.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of digital editorial experience, preferably in consumer health, wellness, or service journalism.
  • Strong editing and writing skills, with the ability to make complex health topics understandable and relevant to a general audience.
  • Experience assigning and editing freelance writers and managing multiple deadlines.
  • Sound editorial judgment and a rigorous approach to medical accuracy, sourcing, and fact-checking.
  • An empathetic approach to covering health conditions, treatment decisions, and patient experiences.
  • Familiarity with digital audience development, including search, newsletters, social distribution, and content performance.
  • Ability to use audience insights and analytics to improve content.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills, with an interest in working across written, video, audio, and social formats.
  • Experience with content management systems and editorial planning tools.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies and responsible uses of AI in editorial workflows.
