Summary

As a Senior Database Administrator, you will join our database administration team to support, optimize, and help drive the migration of our database footprint into AWS Aurora (MySQL) and AWS RDS (SQL Server). Working within the Product Development and R&D group alongside fellow DBAs, your primary focus will be MySQL and AWS Aurora MySQL query performance tuning, index optimization, and database engine refactoring, while also providing secondary administration and tuning support for our SQL Server / RDS environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • MySQL & Aurora Query Performance Tuning: Lead deep-dive query tuning and performance diagnostics primarily on MySQL and AWS Aurora MySQL (along with SQL Server), analyzing execution plans (EXPLAIN, Query Store), index strategies, and memory usage to eliminate bottlenecks and optimize response times.
  • Database Code Refactoring: Analyze, refactor, and tune database logic—including existing MySQL and SQL Server stored procedures, views, triggers, and inline queries—to improve execution efficiency, error handling, and transactional throughput.
  • DBA Team Collaboration & Cloud Migration: Work alongside existing DBAs to execute schema refactoring, data transformations, and object migrations into AWS Aurora MySQL and AWS RDS SQL Server using native tools and AWS migration services (e.g., AWS DMS/SCT).
  • Developer Mentorship & Code Review: Partner with software developers, QA teams, and fellow DBAs to review database queries before deployment, enforce MySQL/Aurora indexing best practices, and mentor engineering teams on query tuning techniques.
  • Database Maintenance & Operations: Share operational responsibilities with the DBA team for maintaining AWS Aurora MySQL and AWS RDS SQL Server instances, including parameter group adjustments, Inno DB buffer pool optimization, index maintenance, and backup validations.
  • Data Modeling & Architecture: Translate complex business requirements into performant, clean relational data models and efficient data transformation logic across both engine ecosystems, with an emphasis on MySQL architecture.

Core Competencies

  • Deep expertise in MySQL / AWS Aurora MySQL query performance tuning, engine internals, and index design, complemented by working knowledge of SQL Server.
  • Proven capability in analyzing execution plans (EXPLAIN, Query Store) to identify, refactor, and optimize slow queries and underlying stored procedures.
  • Collaborative team player who thrives working alongside other DBAs and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Strong grasp of relational schema design, indexing strategies, and locking/concurrency behavior in dual-engine environments.
  • High autonomy, strong problem-solving skills, and clear technical communication.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator, with primary expertise in MySQL and secondary expertise in SQL Server.
  • 5+ years of dedicated experience in query performance tuning, index strategy optimization, and execution plan analysis (with heavy emphasis on MySQL/Aurora).
  • Hands-on experience analyzing and refactoring complex SQL code, including stored procedures, functions, and transactional logic.
  • 3+ years of practical experience managing or migrating database workloads on AWS Aurora (MySQL) and AWS RDS (SQL Server).
  • 3+ years of experience with relational data modeling, schema conversion, and database architecture.

Preferred

  • Practical experience assisting with cloud migrations using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) or AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT).
  • Experience supporting both OLTP (transactional) and analytical/data warehousing workloads.
  • Familiarity with database schema version control and deployment tools (e.g., Flyway, Liquibase, Yuniql).
  • Experience with PowerShell or Bash scripting for automated DBA health checks and maintenance tasks.
