Job Description:

Orbital is currently seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Designer for a REMOTE WORK role to assist with single and multi-discipline projects. The position requires demonstrated design ability and competency with AutoCAD and other CAD tools preferably in a consulting environment, for heavy industrial engineering projects in the oil and gas, chemical, power, manufacturing and metals industries. Occasional travel to active industrial client sites may be required, including field verification in operating plants, refineries, mills, manufacturing facilities, power facilities, or similar industrial environments. Candidates must be comfortable working around existing equipment, congested layouts, constructability constraints, and observing plant safety requirements.

Essential Functions

  • Perform structural inspections of existing facility steel structures and fireproofing according to Orbital Engineering guidelines
  • Prepare conceptual drawings, sketches and material take-offs of concrete and steel.
  • Assist engineering by creating detailed design drawings of various layouts for industrial facilities including:  foundation design, grading plans, underground piping/drainage, structural steel piperack and support design and details
  • Assist the Civil/Structural Engineering department by reviewing vendor shop/fabrication drawings.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with project civil/structural/mechanical/electrical engineers and designers throughout the design process
  • Update design drawings from redline mark ups
  • Field engineering and structural inspections as they relate to work scope
  • Review structural drawings for errors and omissions
  • Review project contract documents throughout the project to ensure quality and accuracy
  • Attend weekly project meetings to review design and project progress
  • Review and update CAD Standards as needed to ensure accuracy and efficiency
  • Mentor Junior Designers and provide first level oversight

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in the field within heavy industrial facilities
  • Ability to walk one to two miles in industrial facilities
  • Ability to work in elevated work conditions
  • Ability to perform field surveying, take measurements, reference from known or temporary benchmarks, and create detailed field notes and sketches of existing site layout, concrete and steel structures

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma is required, and an AS degree from a technical trade school is preferred
  • 5+ years of civil/structural drafting and design experience with structural steel and reinforced concrete in heavy industrial environments
  • Knowledge of industry standards
  • Proficient with AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit
  • 3D Modeling of structures
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • CadWorx
  • Self-starter, works independently with little direction
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding and aptitude in the use of current computer software including CAD systems, Microsoft Office products and design software

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Advance Steel Software
  • Experience with the latest version of Navisworks is a PLUS
  • Experience with Steel Detailing is a PLUS
  • Possession of an active TWIC Card or the ability to obtain one immediately once hired

This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

Location Note:

This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s location.

Salary Range:

$45.00 - $65.00/hr (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
