Job description

About the Client

Our client is an international technology company developing a modular software platform designed to support complex business operations and automated workflows. Their teams work across product, engineering, AI, and operations to build and implement scalable solutions for clients across different environments and use cases.

Role overview

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to build the services and integrations that connect business systems and turn complex operational processes into reliable, automated workflows.

Working primarily with TypeScript and Node.js, you’ll take services from initial design through deployment and ongoing improvement. The role combines backend engineering with hands-on work on AI-powered applications, including the tools, integrations, and execution flows that enable models to carry out real business actions.

This is a role for someone who enjoys understanding how systems fit together, solving practical engineering problems, and taking ownership of what they build. You’ll have room to make technical decisions, contribute to architecture, and see your work used in live client environments.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship backend services and automated workflows from initial requirements through production.

  • Build reusable tools and integration services with clear schemas, validation, and interfaces that other systems can use reliably.

  • Integrate third-party APIs and internal services, handling authentication, retries, rate limits, and idempotency.

  • Implement workflow orchestration, including state, execution limits, permissions, error handling, and human approval steps.

  • Build and maintain MCP servers and other tool interfaces used by model-driven applications.

  • Develop and refine LLM instructions and tool descriptions so applications select the right actions and supply valid arguments.

  • Configure model selection, reasoning settings, tool permissions, and execution limits for each workflow.

  • Debug production failures, including incorrect tool selection, invalid arguments, missing actions, and incomplete execution.

  • Package and deploy services with Docker to cloud runtimes, with logging and instrumentation for diagnosis.

  • Add features and integrations to live services while protecting existing behavior through testing and regression checks.

  • Take initiative on architecture and reliability, identify problems early, and propose practical improvements across system boundaries.

  • Document services and explain their behavior to internal teams and, when needed, client engineers.

Required experience and capabilities

  • At least 3 years building production backend software, with strong TypeScript and Node.js skills.

  • Practical experience integrating REST APIs and third-party systems, including authentication, structured data, and failure handling.

  • Comfort with Docker and at least one cloud platform: AWS, GCP, or Azure.

  • Hands-on experience building LLM applications that call tools, using an established SDK or framework or a custom execution loop, plus practical experience with MCP or equivalent tool-integration patterns.

  • Established habits around Git, automated testing, code review, and debugging production software.

  • Ability to make technical decisions independently, take ownership of outcomes, and communicate clearly in written English.

  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred experience

  • Production experience with Claude Agent SDK, the Anthropic or OpenAI APIs, LangChain/LangGraph, or Vercel AI SDK.

  • Experience writing MCP servers and evaluating model output with test sets, regression checks, or evaluation frameworks.

  • Hands-on AWS experience with ECS/Fargate, Lambda, IAM, or DynamoDB.

  • Experience integrating customer service platforms such as Gladly, Zendesk, Salesforce, or Amazon Connect, or using Python for data work.

What success looks like

The services and workflows you build run reliably in production and complete the business actions they’re designed for. Integrations handle failures predictably, with clear logging and diagnostic information that makes problems easier to investigate and resolve.

Tools and model instructions produce consistent results, supported by repeatable tests and evaluations. New features and integrations reach production without disrupting existing workflows, and reliability improves as usage grows.

You take ownership of delivery and ongoing improvement, identifying problems early and making practical technical decisions. Your teammates understand how your services work, what’s changing, and why.

What you’ll get out of the role

  • The opportunity to own technically complex backend services and integrations, from initial design through production.

  • Hands-on work with TypeScript, Node.js, cloud infrastructure, and AI-powered workflows that carry out real business tasks.

  • A high level of autonomy, with influence over architecture, tooling, and how services are built and maintained.

  • An international, collaborative environment, working directly with product, engineering, AI, and operations teams.

  • The chance to deepen your experience in workflow orchestration, tool integration, and the reliability of model-driven applications.

  • The opportunity to help shape a growing software platform as the product, client base, and technical challenges evolve.

If you enjoy solving complex backend challenges and taking ownership of what you build, we’d love to hear from you!
