Job description

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Join a fast-growing EdTech startup helping more than 1.5 million students worldwide study better and stay motivated through an AI-powered learning platform. With tens of thousands of new students joining each week and approximately $4 million in seed funding, the company is expanding its mobile capabilities.

As Lead iOS Engineer, you will combine hands-on development with technical leadership, taking ownership of the iOS experience and supporting the engineers building it. You will work directly with the founders, influence product decisions and help shape how students engage with learning every day.

The role is fully remote within Europe. Being based in Portugal, particularly Lisbon, is preferred but not required.

PROJECT & CONTEXT

Own the mobile app end-to-end across architecture, performance, release processes and technical roadmap. Set technical direction and mentor the two engineers already supporting mobile, raising engineering standards while maintaining a pragmatic approach to delivery.

Partner with engineering and product leadership on onboarding, growth and retention. Deliver a polished native experience through smooth animations, responsive interactions and platform-specific conventions.

Work in a product-led growth environment: ship features, instrument user journeys, run A/B tests, measure impact and iterate quickly. Manage App Store releases, versioning, store optimization, crash monitoring and performance improvements. As mobile grows, you may also help build a dedicated mobile team.

The core iOS technologies include Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit and Combine. The wider platform uses Node.js, React, React Native, Next.js, NestJS, Expo, Prisma, Tailwind CSS and AWS. Specific technology versions and supported iOS versions are to be confirmed.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

  • At least 5 years of native iOS development experience.
  • Previous experience in a Lead engineering position, with demonstrated responsibility for technical direction and guiding other engineers.
  • Experience leading and mentoring engineers while remaining actively involved in development.
  • Strong proficiency in Swift and practical experience with SwiftUI and UIKit.
  • A proven record of building and shipping consumer-grade iOS applications.
  • Familiarity with Combine, push notifications and App Store deployment.
  • Experience with Xcode, XCTest, TestFlight and App Store Connect.
  • Strong knowledge of common iOS architecture and state management patterns.
  • Experience debugging applications, optimizing performance and monitoring crashes.
  • Ability to translate product goals into technical decisions and take ownership without waiting for fully defined requirements.
  • A startup mindset: hands-on, autonomous, pragmatic, fast-moving and comfortable with ambiguity and evolving responsibilities.
  • Proactive communication and confidence collaborating directly with founders and product stakeholders.
  • English at C1 level or above, required for daily communication, technical discussions and team collaboration.
  • Based in Europe.

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

  • EdTech experience, particularly products supporting students, learning or study habits.
  • Experience in an early-stage startup or a rapidly growing consumer platform.
  • Experience with product-led growth, A/B testing, onboarding and retention optimization.
  • Experience growing an engineering team or supporting technical hiring.
  • Objective-C experience.
  • Android development experience with Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with React Native, Expo or other technologies in the wider platform.
  • Based in Portugal, particularly Lisbon, for closer collaboration with the founders and local team. No mandatory office attendance has been specified.

Compensation: €2,400 – €3,150/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
