Maisha Meds

Digital Health & Health Tech

Maisha Meds is building a digital pharmaceutical benefits manager for essential health products in low- and middle-income countries to improve access to affordable, high-quality, and appropriate medications for the bottom of the pyramid. In our first two years of full-time operations, we have built a network of 350+ clinics and pharmacies in Kenya that leverage our software to support 130,000+ patients monthly, and we anticipate that we will grow to support several thousands of sites in the next two years. Our platform is used to develop a last-mile pharmacy network, manage medication supply chains, pool resources to negotiate better prices for patients, deliver reimbursement for care via mobile money, and verify identity to ensure that patients are receiving the right products at the right prices. We are working to streamline distribution and improve transparency in an environment where an estimated 25-40% of the $37bil in development assistance for health is wasted annually, 10-20% of medication is poor quality, and patients pay cash for the majority of their healthcare. We partner with global health funders and pharmaceutical companies to do this.

Job description

Job Description
Maisha Meds is hiring! We’re seeking an engineering manager to manage our wonderful engineers to build technology to improve healthcare in Africa.

About Maisha Meds

Maisha Meds is an organization dedicated to improving health care in Africa through best-in-class technology.

Founded in 2017, Maisha Meds has created the largest digital network of private pharmacies and clinics across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Zambia through our mobile software. Our platform not only helps these providers improve business by making sales, managing inventory, and tracking patients. It also reimburses them for providing high-quality care for malaria, family planning, and HIV prevention at discounted costs.

Maisha Meds logs millions of patient visits every year and has provided hundreds of thousands of reimbursements to date. We harness data from our network of pharmacies and clinics to reveal health and market trends, which allows us to design better solutions that work for the people we serve. We have worked with leading academic institutions such as UC Berkeley, Emory University, and KEMRI to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs. Research shows that our system is able to significantly increase the uptake of long-acting contraceptives and appropriate malaria case management.

Our work is funded by a range of partners including scale-up funding from USAID Development Innovation Ventures and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This will help Maisha Meds greatly expand its mobile software to 7,500 total pharmacies and clinics by late 2026, delivering subsidized care to nearly a million new patients in the process.

About the role

Maisha Meds builds a point-of-sale Android app for pharmacies to track their sales and manage their inventory and leverage AI to improve directions of use for medicines. On top of the Android app, we have a layer of features to help us run patient programs so that patients visiting pharmacies can receive subsidized care. We also built a suite of back office tools to help our operational staff manage the subsidy programs. This role is for an individual to manage a remote team of engineers across North America, Europe, and Africa, initially managing our patient programs projects team, eventually starting a new team for new projects. Our organization operates in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania and we would love to have you join us onsite a couple of times a year.

This role is remote (worldwide) with expected travel to our countries of operation. You will report to Chief Technology Officer. The salary range is $90,000 - $160,000 USD commensurate with experience and location.
