Job description

Company Overview

Our client is a performance marketing agency specializing in mission-driven organizations across higher education and nonprofit sectors. They combine strategy, creative, and data-driven execution to help universities and organizations achieve measurable growth in enrollments, applications, inquiries, and awareness.

Your Role

As Technical SEO Lead, you'll be the technical SEO expert across a portfolio of higher education partner accounts. Your work improves their visibility in traditional search, answer engines, and generative AI search.

The role has two sides. The first is technical SEO: you find the issues that affect rankings and traffic, write specs developers can act on, and follow through until fixes are live. The second is building Claude-based tools and workflows that reduce manual work in audits, reporting, QA, and content production. That way the team spends its time editing and reviewing rather than starting from scratch.

You'll work alongside the SEO Lead and support the Executive Director of SEO.

You'll

Lead technical SEO across client accounts

  • Run technical audits covering crawlability, indexation, site architecture, internal linking, Core Web Vitals, structured data, redirects, and broken links

  • Prioritize issues by impact and effort, and defend those calls

  • Write dev-ready specs for web developers and client teams, then follow through until fixes are released and verified

  • Handle light WordPress implementation yourself: titles, meta descriptions, plugin-level redirects, and schema through tools like Yoast or Rank Math

  • Monitor Google Search Console and GA4 to catch drops, errors, and indexing problems before clients do

  • Own technical readiness for AI search (AEO/GEO): crawler access, structured data, entity optimization, and content structure that LLM-driven search can parse and cite

Build the systems that scale the SEO service

  • Design and build Claude-based tools, agents, and workflows for technical audits, issue prioritization, reporting, and QA

  • Build content production systems that convert briefs, client rules, and optimization targets into near-publish-ready drafts

  • Translate team standards (writing rules, client guidelines, audit checklists) into reusable systems the whole team can run

  • Connect Search Console, GA4, crawl exports, and Ahrefs/Semrush into workflows that surface what needs attention

  • Document each system, train the team on it, and measure whether it saves time or improves results, retiring the ones that don't

Support the team and client success

  • Act as the team's go-to resource on technical questions

  • Join client calls when a deep technical topic needs expert explanation, with the SEO Lead leading the conversation

  • Evaluate emerging search technologies and recommend new tools, processes, and workflows

You Bring

  • 5+ years in SEO, with at least 3 focused on technical SEO, ideally at an agency or across multiple sites at once

  • A track record of uncovering the highest-impact issues on a site, prioritizing them, and getting them fixed. We care more about your judgment than the length of your checklist.

  • Deep hands-on experience with Google Search Console, GA4, Screaming Frog, and Ahrefs or Semrush

  • Strong working knowledge of WordPress: how themes, plugins, redirects, and schema work, and enough to spec fixes precisely even when you're not the one building them

  • Advanced, hands-on experience with Claude, including building agents and AI-assisted workflows that other people use in real work

  • Clear written communication. You can write a spec a developer can act on and a recommendation a client can understand.

  • Comfort owning outcomes across many accounts at once without waiting to be told what's next

Bonus Points

  • Experience with the Claude API or other APIs, or basic scripting in Python or JavaScript

  • Experience with AI search visibility (AEO/GEO) and how LLM-driven search finds and cites content

  • Experience with log file analysis, JavaScript SEO, or large-scale site migrations

  • Familiarity with Grammarly, Asana, or similar tools used across content and delivery teams

  • Experience in higher education or enrollment marketing

What's Offered

  • Fully remote work

  • Compensation based on experience; share your target range

  • A portfolio of higher education partner accounts with different sites and technical setups

  • Hands-on work in SEO, AEO, and GEO as AI search changes how students find schools

  • Direct influence on how the agency's SEO service runs, through the systems you build and document
