Job description

Relae (formerly Carbon Direct) helps organizations like Microsoft, Mitsubishi, and JPMorgan Chase make defensible, high-stakes decisions across energy strategy, decarbonization, environmental markets, and natural capital. Our teams combine scientific rigor with commercial and policy fluency to answer questions that matter, and we invest just as seriously in the people answering them, with a clear path for career growth, structured manager development, and real ownership of hard problems from day one.

The role

We're looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our engineering team, fully remote within the US. You'll build and ship features across the stack, from the services and data layers behind them to the user-facing interfaces. This role suits someone who likes owning a problem end-to-end, who constantly innovates through applying emergent technologies in novel ways, and who is comfortable working close to real data.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and ship features across the stack
  • Work with data pipelines and services that move, transform, and store geospatial, tabular, and vector data
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to scope software and make pragmatic technical tradeoffs
  • Write clean, tested, maintainable code, and review others' code with the same standard
  • Help diagnose and resolve performance, reliability, and quality issues as they come up
  • Contribute to technical decisions about system design, tooling, and process as the team grows
  • Use AI and agentic coding tools as part of your everyday workflow, and help the team find good ways to use them

What we're looking for

  • Experience delivering and iterating on features across the stack
  • Solid command of at least one modern server stack and one front-end framework
  • Some exposure to data-intensive systems, such as ETL jobs, message queues, data pipelines, caching layers, workflow orchestration
  • Comfort working with both cloud-hosted SQL Databases (BigQuery, Postgres, Snowflake etc.) and NoSQL Data Stores
  • Strong communication skills and a habit of documenting your work so others can pick it up
  • A genuine interest in climate, clean energy transition, and sustainability.
  • Hands-on experience with AI or agentic development tools, and a clear sense of where they speed you up and where they don't

Nice to have

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure as code
  • Familiarity with scientific, environmental, sustainability, and/or energy network/grid data
  • Prior experience at an early- or growth-stage startup
  • Evidence of side projects or hobby hacking: things you've built on your own time, whether that's a GitHub history, a personal tool, an open-source contribution, or something you built just to see if you could
  • Contributions to open source projects

Salary

$143,000-$200,000
