Company Description

Zayo provides mission-critical bandwidth to the world’s most impactful companies, fueling the innovations that are transforming our society. Zayo’s 141,000-mile network in North America and Europe includes extensive metro connectivity to thousands of buildings and data centers. Zayo’s communications infrastructure solutions include dark fiber, private data networks, wavelengths, Ethernet, and dedicated Internet access. Zayo serves wireless and wireline carriers, media, tech, content, finance, healthcare and other large enterprises.

The Senior GIS Developer is a member of the GIS Development team responsible for building and supporting GIS solutions that enable Zayo’s business and network operations. The role works primarily with our custom QGIS Application, ESRI ArcGIS technologies, enterprise databases, and related business systems to deliver desktop and web-based mapping capabilities.

This GIS ecosystem along with other fiber management tools is core to Zayo’s architecture and fundamentally supports the company’s overall business strategy. The ideal candidate combines strong GIS and software-development skills with sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced Agile environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support server-based geoprocessing tools and automated data-update processes using Python and SQL.
  • Build QGIS plugins and custom forms using Python/PyQGIS and Qt-based interfaces to support data acquisition, editing, validation, geoprocessing, and system integration.
  • Manage, Deploy and Support our Zayo QGIS Custom Plugins and work closely with the GIS Principle Software Engineer on the innovation of these tools, system integration and architecture diagrams.
  • Designing and implementing organization-wide GIS Standards for all Server, Cloud, Web, Desktop products and enterprise database structures we support.
  • Build and maintain FME Flow or Python-based ETL and scheduled data-processing workflows that automate mapping, data-management, and recurring GIS operations.
  • Develop and maintain network-routing solutions using shortest-path algorithms while accounting for complex dependencies, constraints, and business parameters.
  • Produce clear technical documentation, coding standards, workflow guidance, and training materials; provide knowledge transfer through demonstrations or remote training sessions.
  • Contribute to software-development activities throughout the development lifecycle, working collaboratively within an Agile/Scrum team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography/GIS, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline with a strong foundation in geographic concepts and principles.
  • Minimum of five to seven (5–7) years of relevant GIS and software-development experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python for GIS automation, geoprocessing, ArcGIS web applications, REST services, and network-analysis workflows.
  • Understanding of SDLC practices, source control, testing, debugging, and maintainable code design; strong analytical skills and attention to data quality.
  • Strong knowledge of algorithms, data structures, data modeling, and distributed systems, with practical experience applying these concepts to network and spatial problems.
  • Proficiency with Esri’s ArcGIS platform, including desktop, online, server, enterprise database, vector-data, geoprocessing, and spatial-analysis capabilities.
  • Strong web-development skills using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with experience working with ArcGIS JavaScript APIs, Web AppBuilder, ArcGIS Server services, and other relevant API libraries.
  • Experience designing or consuming APIs and integrating GIS with external business or operational systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong SQL and relational database experience, preferably PostgreSQL/PostGIS, plus solid knowledge of vector data, geoprocessing, spatial analysis, coordinate systems, and topology.
  • Experience with telecommunications, outside plant (OSP), fiber network inventory, route planning, or network design.
  • Hands-on experience with QGIS and PyQGIS; experience creating plugins, custom processing tools, forms, or workflow extensions.
  • Experience leading user training, writing technical process documentation, or supporting GIS users across multiple teams.
