Zayo’s 141,000-mile network in North America and Europe includes extensive metro connectivity to thousands of buildings and data centers. Zayo’s communications infrastructure solutions include dark fiber, private data networks, wavelengths, Ethernet, and dedicated Internet access. Do you enjoy turning complex technical challenges into reliable, well-designed software? Are you passionate about building applications, integrations, and services that power your organization? If so, then we want you on our team!

We’re looking for a talented Senior Software Engineer, Application Development to join our growing team. In this role, you’ll help design, build, deploy, and support software services that power network observability across Zayo. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role. You will own complex services and cross-service capabilities, translate ambiguous operational needs into scalable solutions, mentor other engineers, and establish practical engineering standards. You will partner with Software Architecture, Network Operations, SRE, DevOps, Infrastructure, Security, product stakeholders, and network-domain experts to ensure services are secure, testable, deployable, observable, resilient, and supportable in production.

Technology Environment

Our environment includes technologies such as:

  • Backend: Python 3.11+, FastAPI, gRPC, Pydantic, Protobuf, SQLAlchemy, and Alembic
  • Data and messaging: PostgreSQL, NATS, Redis and asynchronous messaging
  • Platform and delivery: Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI, Helm, and Terraform
  • Observability and networking: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Elasticsearch, VictoriaMetrics, gNMI, SNMP, NETCONF, and vendor APIs

The technology mix varies by service. Equivalent experience with comparable frameworks, messaging platforms, databases, and infrastructure technologies is welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and operation of complex backend Python services, APIs, and data-processing workflows, translating ambiguous requirements into clear technical approaches while remaining hands-on in the codebase.
  • Design asynchronous and event-driven integrations and establish scalable patterns for API and event contracts, schema evolution, validation, error handling, database migrations, backward compatibility, and distributed-system reliability.
  • Make and document technical decisions that balance delivery speed, operational risk, maintainability, scalability, and long-term platform direction; contribute to technical roadmaps and modernization efforts.
  • Lead design and code reviews, establish practical standards for Python, testing, security, observability, and documentation, and mentor engineers in breaking down complex work and delivering incrementally.
  • Improve CI/CD practices and partner with SRE and DevOps on container images, Kubernetes deployments, infrastructure as code, secrets management, environment configuration, deployment verification, and rollback.
  • Define production-readiness expectations through service-level indicators, metrics, dashboards, alerts, performance testing, capacity analysis, and resilience testing.
  • Lead complex incident investigations, address root causes and corrective actions, and drive systemic risks spanning multiple services, repositories, teams, or environments to resolution.
  • Coordinate technical dependencies across internal projects and platforms, working with Network Operations and other users to ensure solutions measurably improve operational outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced Python development experience, including structuring, testing, packaging, and operating long-lived backend applications.
  • Experience leading the design or delivery of distributed services, APIs, data platforms, network tools, or automation systems, including asynchronous or event-driven integrations.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, transaction behavior, indexing, and controlled schema migrations.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, Docker, containerized services, CI/CD pipelines, and automated software-quality and security controls.
  • Experience implementing production observability and diagnosing complex problems across application code, infrastructure, databases, messaging systems, and external dependencies.
  • Demonstrated ownership of production software through delivery, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and continual improvement.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through architecture, mentoring, project leadership, design reviews, code reviews, or cross-team influence, with the ability to communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing software solutions within the telecommunications industry, with an understanding of carrier networks, network operations, service assurance, network inventory, provisioning, transport/IP technologies, or telecommunications operational support systems (OSS).
  • Experience with FastAPI, Pydantic, SQLAlchemy, Alembic, gRPC, Protobuf, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, or another production messaging platform.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, GitLab CI, GitOps, or progressive-delivery tooling.
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Elasticsearch, Loki, VictoriaMetrics, service-level objectives, or advanced performance and resilience testing.
  • Experience with network telemetry protocols such as gNMI, SNMP, or NETCONF and integrations with network inventory, alarming, service-assurance, or orchestration platforms.
  • Experience processing high-volume operational telemetry or building software for NOC, SRE, infrastructure, network-engineering, or telecommunications environments.

Education And Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of professional software development experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience designing and operating complex production systems.
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology OR equivalent relevant professional experience.

Estimated base salary range: $95,100 - $146,300 USD/annually.
