Job Description Summary:

Develops, analyzes and makes recommendations for creating audits and streamlining efforts for daily payroll operations. Serves as subject matter expert, provides guidance and sound judgment to payroll team regarding payroll process changes. Responsible for providing excellent customer service by answering payroll questions from the field and meeting all deadlines. Refers to company policies and other tools to research and ensure the questions are answered correctly and timely. Assists in bi-weekly payroll processing and special projects as needed. Expected to maintain confidentiality of all material handled.

Job Responsibilities (listed in order of importance and/or time spent)

  • Perform internal audits of various areas including, but not limited to Payroll, HR-OPS and Benefits.
  • Works with vendors to ensure requested tasks are completed accurately and timely. Escalates appropriately when needed.
  • Analyze and respond to complex matters requiring comprehensive knowledge of payroll policies and procedures; authorizes exceptions to the policy within defined limits.
  • Participate in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations; coordinate approved changes within payroll system; updates impacted policy/procedure manuals.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis as needed. Spearhead process improvement projects/streamlining initiatives to create efficiencies throughout the department.   
  • Research and advise co-workers and management concerning complex issues regarding Payroll, Benefits and HR.
  • Research and interpret a variety of complex technical information in response to inquiries.
  • Accomplish goals with minimal supervision and escalates issues to management. Depends on oneself to complete objectives and determining when escalation of issues is necessary.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external parties by answering accurately and timely.
  • Refers to appropriate company polices and State/Federal guidelines to ensure compliance and creditability.
  • Focuses on building trusted business partnerships with counterparts and key stakeholders.

Basic Education and/or Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • At least 3 year of experience in processing payroll containing multiple entities and over 5,000 employees. 
  • Or, a combination of relevant experience in Benefits or HRIS and Payroll with the minimum of 5 years total (with employee population over 5,000) may be acceptable.

Basic Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of payroll principles, practices, regulations and procedures including, but not limited to tax, garnishment and compliance.
  • Experience providing customer service to internal and external customers, including meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Experience communicating both verbally (on phone, one-on-one, etc.) and in writing (emails, letters, etc.) to various audiences (work group, team, company management, etc.).
  • Prior experience with outside vendors.
  • Experience using time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Office 2003 or later: Word (for example: creating and modifying text styles, numbering and sorting lists, working with sections and columns, formatting tables, and using templates and using diagrams and drawing tools), Excel (for example: vlook-up, formulas, pivot tables, graphs and charts, formatting text and borders of cells, working with workbooks and worksheets, using range names, referencing cells, sorting, and auto filtering, etc.) and PowerPoint  (for example: creating presentations, adding and removing slides, entering and formatting text, applying design templates, modifying masters, inserting graphics and objects, creating handouts).
  • Experience developing ways of accomplishing goals with minimal supervision, depending on oneself to complete objectives and determining when escalation of issues is necessary.

Due to state pay transparency laws, the full range for the position is below:

Salary to be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Pay Range is $57,187.58-$95,312.63
