Job description

The organization is a rapidly growing internet service provider based in Melbourne Australia delivering lightning-fast, rock-solid internet for all customers. As Leaptel scales we rely on our in-house software development expertise to maintain and improve our operational and customer-facing systems.

Position summary

In this role, you will be reporting directly to the Development Team Leader and working within a scrum-based Development Team. Building and maintaining both internal software tools and customer facing products, the Senior Developer contributes to the ongoing success of the business. The ability to communicate with stakeholders to understand needs and quickly translate those into functional systems is key. This role is accountable for the development of new systems as well as maintenance, troubleshooting and debugging of legacy code.

Key responsibilities of the role

• Software development & design

o Design, develop, test and maintain robust, scalable applications using PHP and Laravel frameworks.

o Build and integrate APIs, background jobs, and data models that support both internal tools and customer-facing products.

o Write clean, well-structured, maintainable code that adheres to company standards.

o Contribute to architectural decisions and help ensure the codebase remains secure and scalable as the business grows.

o Participate actively in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback to lift overall code quality.

• Technical leadership

o Champion best-practice engineering standards, including testing, version control workflows and documentation.

o Contribute to the ongoing improvement of team technical standards and processes.

o Engage with other developers to resolve complex problems and discuss design decisions.

• Scrum team collaboration

o Work within a scrum-based development team, contributing to sprint planning, work estimation, reviews and retrospectives.

o Collaborate with stakeholders to scope new feature development, maintenance tasks and bug fixes.

o Collaborate closely with the QA team to ensure adequate test coverage and clarity of acceptance criteria

o Ensure timely delivery of sprint goals and proactively engage with the team to address risks that impact project delivery.

• Quality and continuous improvement o Collaborate with the QA team and build automated tests (unit, integration) to support high-quality, efficient, reliable, repeatable delivery.

o Work with CI/CD pipelines and Git workflows to meet a frequent release schedule. o Identify opportunities to improve development processes, tooling and ways of working.

o Maintain documentation for designs, features, systems, databases and processes. Required experience & technical skills To succeed in this role you need experience with the following tools (or similar) and a demonstrated ability to learn to use new technologies quickly will be highly favoured: • PHP 8

• Laravel Framework

• Javascript Framework (React/Vue.js/Angular)

• Local Development / Virtualization (Vagrant/Docker/XAMPP/MAMP)

• Linux server environments (on premises and cloud-based)

• Database architecture and tools for design, implementation and optimisation of queries and tables (MySQL, MariaDB, redis)

• Git/GitHub/Gitlab/Bitbucket

• API design and integration (REST/GraphQL)

• AI Tooling / Automation The following skills are not essential but familiarity is are desirable for Senior Developer role:

• DevOps

• Laravel Framework

Key selection criteria

To be considered for this role, you should be able to demonstrate:

• Strong English language skills, both written and verbal.

• Willingness to work in Melbourne (Australia) hours to align with company head office.

• Flexibility to work outside standard hours for planned deployments when needed.

• Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience.

• 5+ years' experience in a similar DevOps or Systems Engineering role.

• Experience working in remote-based teams.

• Extensive experience designing and implementing automated CI/CD pipelines to replace manual, single-user deployment processes.

• Strong understanding of Docker, Linux environments, and Cloud infrastructure scaling.

• Initiative to 'roll up your sleeves' and figure things out when necessary.

• Ability to problem solve and work independently and as part of the development team.
