Job description

Job Scope:

The Sr. Environmental Specialist will serve as a client-facing environmental consultant within Tormod’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) group, providing practical permitting, compliance, and risk-reduction solutions for manufacturing and industrial clients throughout the continental United States. This position requires extensive environmental expertise, particularly in water and air permitting, along with strong consulting, project management, business development, and client relationship management skills. The successful candidate will evaluate client needs, develop practical solutions, lead environmental engagements, and support the growth of Tormod’s environmental services. The Sr. Environmental Specialist is expected to operate effectively in a seller-doer environment, building trusted client relationships while managing project execution, identifying new opportunities, and delivering high-quality environmental solutions. This position offers the flexibility to develop as an individual contributor or as a leader of other professionals.


Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Understand and practice Tormod and Hargrove core values.
  • Serve as a trusted environmental consultant and advisor to manufacturing and industrial clients.
  • Lead water and air permitting strategies, including application development, agency coordination, permit maintenance, renewals, and modifications.
  • Provide environmental compliance support and develop practical solutions to address client regulatory obligations and operational needs.
  • Evaluate client needs, regulatory requirements, site conditions, and business objectives to develop effective environmental strategies.
  • Lead environmental compliance assessments, audits, program reviews, and corrective action planning.
  • Support the implementation of environmental compliance programs and corrective actions.
  • Manage environmental projects and engagements, including scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, risks, and client expectations.
  • Support business development by identifying client needs, developing scopes of work, contributing to proposals, and presenting environmental solutions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships to support client retention, expanded services, and new business opportunities.
  • Prepare clear and technically accurate reports, presentations, proposals, action plans, and client communications.
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, client representatives, technical teams, and other stakeholders regarding permitting and compliance matters.
  • Communicate complex environmental requirements and recommendations in practical, business-focused language.
  • Identify opportunities to expand Tormod's environmental services and collaborate across Tormod service lines.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to other environmental professionals as appropriate.
  • Balance multiple client engagements, competing priorities, and project deadlines while maintaining responsiveness and quality.
  • Support client site work, permitting activities, project execution, and relationship-building efforts through domestic travel.
  • Demonstrate strong time management, organization, and professional judgment.
  • Apply Tormod and Hargrove Policies and Procedures (HMS).

Ideal Background


Education: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Natural Resources, or a related technical field is preferred. An advanced degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience is a plus.

Registration: Professional certifications, licenses, or relevant environmental credentials are strongly preferred. Examples may include applicable environmental, engineering, safety, or other industry-recognized certifications.

Experience: Significant environmental experience supporting manufacturing, industrial, chemical, energy, infrastructure, or similar facilities is required.

Demonstrated expertise in water and air permitting, including application development, renewals, modifications, ongoing permit maintenance, and regulatory coordination, is required. Water permitting experience is particularly important due to frequent client demand.

Proven experience in environmental consulting, business development, project management, and client relationship management is required. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to manage client expectations, project scope, schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables while identifying opportunities to grow client relationships and environmental services.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of environmental permitting and regulatory compliance requirements, particularly water and air permitting.
  • Ability to lead permitting strategies, develop applications, coordinate with regulatory agencies, and support permit renewals, modifications, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Ability to conduct environmental compliance assessments, audits, program reviews, and corrective action planning.
  • Strong consulting skills, including the ability to evaluate client needs, develop practical solutions, communicate recommendations, and support implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, site leaders, executives, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver clear, professional reports, proposals, presentations, and technical documentation.
  • Strong presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex environmental topics in clear, business-focused language.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, priorities, risks, and deliverables across multiple engagements.
  • Strong business development skills, including identifying opportunities, developing scopes of work, contributing to proposals, and building client relationships.
  • Ability to manage client expectations and maintain strong professional relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively in a seller-doer consulting environment while balancing technical execution and business development responsibilities.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills, including the ability to guide client discussions, influence teams, and drive accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a virtual and multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to balance competing priorities, meet deadlines, travel efficiently, and remain responsive to clients.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for expanded services and collaborate effectively across Tormod service lines.
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance programs involving waste management, spill prevention, stormwater, hazardous materials, construction, and related environmental requirements is preferred.
  • Experience supporting multi-site clients, industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, capital projects, operational changes, expansions, or regulatory compliance programs is preferred.
  • Ability to travel throughout the continental United States and work effectively in industrial and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required client site access credentials, including a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card when required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry in excess of 25 lbs.
  • Ability to travel by vehicle and/or commercial flight, including overnight trips.
  • Ability to drive to client sites and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Ability to function safely for 8–10 hours per workday in manufacturing and industrial plant environments.
  • Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in industrial environments that may include exposure to cold, hot, noisy, and dusty conditions.
  • Ability to access client facilities and perform site assessments, inspections, and other environmental field activities as required.
  • Ability to travel approximately 40% throughout the continental United States.
