Position Purpose

Senior Network Engineer-Network Protocols & Devices role is part of our Agile/Scrum SaaS Solutions Engineering team. This role strengthens the team with deep network expertise, builds automation for network equipment, and helps support our global authentication service: an AWS cloud-based central authentication platform used around the world to effortlessly and securely connect guests and residents (and all their devices) to the internet with an at-home Wi-Fi experience. Our platform serves a variety of markets. From hotels and multi-family residences to campgrounds and college campuses, every day, tens of millions of people benefit from the services we provide. 

This is a bridge role for a seasoned network engineer who already programs. You bring deep, hands-on experience running production IP networks—ideally Wi-Fi—including network authentication (RADIUS/AAA) and large, multi-vendor fleets of routers, switches, gateways, and access points, along with a track record of scripting to automate provisioning and troubleshoot issues at scale. You will start as the team’s network and device expert and, with mentorship from our senior software engineers, progressively take on the design and development of the software services that control and integrate with that infrastructure. A genuine desire to make that transition into software engineering is essential. 

Reporting Relationships

This role reports to an Engineering Manager and has no direct reports. 

Essential Job Functions

• Configure, manage, and troubleshoot a large, multi-vendor fleet of network devices—gateways, routers, switches, and access points—including MikroTik RouterOS (scripting, APIs, and policy enforcement), Meraki, Nomadix, Ruckus, and Aruba 

• Design, operate, and troubleshoot network authentication end to end: RADIUS, 802.1X, EAP methods, certificate-based authentication, captive portal and MAC-based flows, and related AAA workflows 

• Develop scripts and automation (Python, Bash, RouterOS scripting, vendor APIs) that streamline device provisioning, configuration management, authentication, and device lifecycle management across large deployments 

• Build diagnostic tooling and lead root-cause analysis of complex network and authentication issues across customer deployments, using packet captures, device logs, and platform telemetry 

• Serve as the team’s subject-matter expert on network protocols and devices: translate network behavior and vendor capabilities into clear requirements for the software platform, and review designs for how our services interact with network infrastructure 

• Progressively take on software engineering work alongside our senior engineers: architect, implement, and maintain the software systems that interact with or control network infrastructure, including RESTful APIs and security-hardened containerized services on modern Linux-based and AWS infrastructure 

• Collaborate with other development, product management, and UX team members to turn user stories into performant, scalable capabilities, features, services, and applications within the ecosystem 

• Partner with team members across functions to solve architectural, network-design, and code-design challenges 

• Stay informed about network, service-design, and code best practices and champion decisions that will scale and make a difference in the long term 

• Work within Agile methodology with two-week sprints 

• Identify and incorporate security requirements—across both the network and the software development lifecycle—and participate in security reviews as needed to facilitate technical discovery 

• Document network standards, runbooks, and troubleshooting guides; mentor teammates on network protocols and devices and contribute to team-level knowledge sharing and best practices 

• Participate in on-call rotation

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. This job operates remotely, in a home office environment, with occasional travel for team meetings or company offsites. 

Physical Demands: 

Remains in a stationary position for extended periods of time.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, cell phones, computer mouse and computer monitor.  For remote office setup; places, moves, installs, replaces and hooks up technology equipment that may weigh up to 20 pounds. Communicates complex information effectively to clients and co-workers via telephone, video, or email.

Candidate Requirements 

Must Have: 

• 8+ years of hands-on experience designing, deploying, operating, and troubleshooting production IP networks 

• Very strong command of network fundamentals—routing, switching, VLANs, NAT, firewalling, DHCP, DNS, VPNs, and QoS—with the ability to diagnose issues across Layers 2–7 

• Deep understanding of network authentication—RADIUS, AAA workflows, 802.1X, EAP methods, and certificate-based authentication—with hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting it in production 

• Hands-on experience with a variety of routers, switches, gateways, and access points from multiple vendors, including but not limited to MikroTik, Meraki, Nomadix, Ruckus, and Aruba 

• Experience managing a large fleet of network devices in large-scale, multi-site deployments, including centralized configuration management, monitoring, and firmware/lifecycle management 

• Programming and scripting experience applied to network operations: automating provisioning and configuration, and building tooling to troubleshoot issues (e.g., Python, Bash, RouterOS scripting, vendor REST APIs) 

• Strong Linux knowledge and comfort in CLI-driven environments 

• Genuine willingness and demonstrated aptitude to transition into software engineering: you want to move beyond scripting into designing and building production software services, and you are motivated to learn modern development practices (version control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, cloud services) 
• Strong desire to help a successful company scale existing cloud-based services while also being a significant contributor to the development of new products 

Strongly Preferred 

• Experience with large-scale Wi-Fi/WLAN deployments in hospitality, multi-family, campus, or similar high-density guest environments, including cloud-managed and controller-based access points and RF fundamentals 

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field 
• Relevant networking certifications (e.g., MikroTik MTCNA/MTCRE, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, CWNA, or equivalent vendor certifications) 
  

Nice to Have 

• • Professional software engineering experience beyond scripting, ideally on systems that interact with or control network infrastructure
  • Experience with RESTful API design, Git and CI/CD, AWS Serverless and CloudFormation, security-hardened containerized services, or Python, C#/.NET, and SQL

Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography.
