Medical Science Liaison, Ophthalmology - North Central Territory

Full-Time Role

Location: Chicago, IL; Milwaukee, WI; Indianapolis, IN; or Detroit, MI

Compensation: Expected base pay range for this position is $134,200 to $188,000; with a higher range of $165,000 to $231,000 for candidates hired at the Senior level (4+ years experience), plus bonus, stock equity, and comprehensive benefits. 

About the Role

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) reports to the National Director of Field Medical and serves as a field-based scientific expert supporting healthcare professionals across a designated territory. This individual will engage in compliant scientific exchange, provide disease state education, respond to medical inquiries, and gather insights that help inform medical strategy.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) in optometry and ophthalmology within the assigned territory, ensuring all activities are conducted in a compliant manner.

  • Serve as the primary Medical Affairs point of contact for scientific exchange and educational engagement with healthcare professionals through both virtual and in-person interactions.

  • Gather actionable field insights and communicate findings to internal stakeholders to help shape medical strategy and initiatives.

  • Deliver disease state and scientific education to healthcare providers and practice staff.

  • Support educational initiatives within optometry schools and ophthalmology residency programs.

  • Provide guidance regarding investigator-initiated research processes and medical information resources as appropriate.

  • Identify and recommend expert faculty and advisors for educational programs, advisory boards, publications, clinical research, and other Medical Affairs initiatives.

  • Develop and execute KOL engagement plans and attend local, regional, and national scientific meetings.

  • Collaborate with professional societies and relevant healthcare organizations within the territory.

  • Present scientific and clinical information to a variety of healthcare stakeholders, including payer audiences.

  • Contribute leadership and expertise to Medical Affairs projects and cross-functional initiatives.

  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to training, insights generation, and field medical operations.

  • Lead and facilitate scientific discussions and educational programs focused on disease awareness and patient care.

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners including Clinical Development, Commercial, Medical Information, and Training.

  • Provide support for clinical development activities and study-related initiatives, when needed.

  • Maintain territory plans, KOL profiles, CRM documentation, and budget accountability.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD), MD, PharmD, or PhD with expertise in ophthalmology, optometry, or eye care.

  • 2+ years of Medical Science Liaison experience within ophthalmology, optometry, or a related specialty.

  • Alternative backgrounds may include significant clinical eye care experience combined with industry exposure.

  • Senior-level opportunities may be available for candidates with 4+ years of prior MSL experience.

  • Strong scientific communication and presentation skills.

  • Excellent relationship-building and emotional intelligence.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

  • Experience using CRM platforms, Microsoft Office, and other field-based tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and communicate actionable insights.

  • Strong collaboration and cross-functional partnership skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

The territory includes: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Northeast Michigan.


Candidates will ideally be located in: Chicago, IL; Milwaukee, WI; Indianapolis, IN; or Detroit, MI.


Additional Information
This is a field-based position requiring approximately 60-80% travel.
Candidates should reside within the territory, ideally within easy access to a major airport.
