Job description

Council Capital is a healthcare-focused private equity firm based in Nashville, Tennessee, managing over $350 million in committed capital.

We invest in lower middle market healthcare companies where we see the potential to scale purpose and performance. Our investments span control and minority positions in businesses with enterprise values between $10 million and $100 million.

What sets us apart is the Council Model—a proven framework that surrounds founders and leadership teams with a powerful combination of support: our CEO Council of seasoned operators, our Strategic Healthcare Investors who bring real-world insight and access, and our internal Value Creation Team, focused on enabling growth through talent, systems, and strategy.

At Council Capital, we’re not just backing companies—we’re helping build enduring businesses that improve lives and shape the future of healthcare.

THE ROLE

This is a senior individual contributor position. You will build services and interfaces on a cloud platform, work closely with product, and take work from request to shipped without needing fully specified requirements handed to you.

The team works on a trunk-based flow with short-lived branches and a daily rhythm. This shapes the job more than the stack does. Work is broken into one to two day pieces rather than multi-week builds; code review is constant and reciprocal, and progress is visible every day, even when nothing lands. If you prefer to disappear for three weeks and return with a large branch, this role will not suit you.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

  • Building features end-to-end: REST APIs, single page application work, and the underlying data model

  • Designing on a cloud platform with containers and stateless services, working through architectural questions with the team

  • Taking product requests, shaping them into work items, and building them; measured by first-time acceptance and minimal rework, not volume

  • Reviewing a couple of teammate pull requests each week, and delivering code that follows the team’s existing patterns

  • Relational database development: schema, queries, and associated performance considerations

  • Protecting patient data; zero PHI in development environments, with no exceptions or workarounds

What good looks like: you contribute most days, ship results two to three times a week, keep branches short-lived, and your work often reaches acceptance the first time. Complex tasks show daily progress, even on days without code commits.

WHO THRIVES HERE

  • You are a quick study and have become useful in unfamiliar stacks within weeks, not months

  • You seek the root cause before building, preferring to ask clarifying questions rather than deliver the wrong solution

  • You decide autonomously and know when to check in or proceed, generating your own work items with sound judgment

  • You are comfortable thinking in abstractions, viewing stateless, containerized design on an evolving platform as interesting

  • You are unwavering on data ethics—nobody needs to remind you about proper production data handling

  • You accept code review without defensiveness and act on feedback; review here is daily and reciprocal

  • You adopt the team’s patterns and engage in design discussions early, rather than pushing back in pull requests

  • You maintain a steady pace over years, preferring consistent output to bursts of heroics followed by burnout

WHAT YOU BRING

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience in a modern language, building REST APIs and single page applications

  • Working knowledge of cloud technology, including containers and stateless app development

  • Relational database development experience with broad depth (not just expertise in one engine)

  • Experience in a version-controlled development environment

Nice to Have

  • Trunk-based development experience

  • Python, React, and Postgres

  • Agentic or AI-assisted coding tools

  • Experience in a high-compliance environment, healthcare or otherwise
