Job description

Role Purpose

The Nutrition Programme Clinical Lead provides clinical oversight for Children Not Numbers nutrition programme as a member of the MDT. The role ensures timely, safe and evidence‑based review of children’s nutritional status, supports caseworkers with daily clinical queries, and contributes to multidisciplinary decision‑making for complex cases. The clinician will play a central role in identifying children at highest nutritional risk, coordinating specialist dietary support, and strengthening partnerships with in‑country nutrition services and UNICEF.

Key Responsibilities 

Clinical Case Review

  • Manage the Nutrition team to work together to ensure that all incoming caseworker clinical queries are providing timely guidance. 
  • Assess cases escalated by caseworkers and determine which require urgent MDT discussion. 

Nutritional Risk Assessment

  • Review nutritional status data including weight‑for‑age, SD scores, and MUAC measurements. 
  • Identify children who require urgent food supplementation, those at greatest risk of refeeding syndrome, and those needing immediate in‑hospital treatment. 
  • Prioritise cases for MDT review based on clinical urgency and risk. 

MDT Participation

  • Attend one nutrition MDT per week to review and advise on clinical care. 
  • Present and discuss complex cases, contribute to clinical decision‑making, and support follow‑up actions. 
  • Liaise with other Sub-specialist MDT colleagues as required to address clinical needs 
  • Ensure that all SAM/MAM cases are reviewed at MDT in a timely manner 

InCountry Clinical Liaison

  • Maintain strong relationships with local clinicians and nutrition partners. 
  • Partner with UNICEF to strengthen nutritional pathways and ensure access to appropriate supplementation. 

Special Diets & Food Procurement

  • Support the preparation of up to date lists of children requiring special diets (e.g., feeding difficulties, metabolic conditions, food intolerances). 
  • Work closely with the procurement and aid teams to ensure the right food reaches the right child. 
  • Provide clinical oversight for specialised nutrition lists and updates. 

Programme Support & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with caseworkers, MDT colleagues, the aid team, maternal health team, and other CNN teams as required. 
  • Contribute to programme development, quality improvement, and identification of opportunities for expanded in‑country support. 
  • Support operational processes that enhance the efficiency and safety of the nutrition programme. 

Advocacy and Engagement  

  • Collaborate on the development and implementation of new initiatives and projects related to nutrition.     
  • Engage with colleagues and stakeholders to raise awareness about nutrition 
  • Support advocacy efforts and educational campaigns to improve understanding and management of nutrition related conditions. 
  • Support data collation, related studies and publication in the medical literature. 

Skills and Experience Required: 

Essential: 

Consultant Paediatrician or Specialist Registrar in Paediatrics (ST6 or above) or equivalent or Paediatric Clinical Dietician 

Person Specification: 

  • Effective communication - Able to communicate clearly and professionally with caseworkers, clinicians, and partner organisations. 
  • Collaborative MDT working - confident contributing to MDT discussions and supporting decision‑making for complex cases. 
  • Cultural sensitivity – Demonstrates awareness of the cultural, social and humanitarian context in Gaza. Understanding of Gaza’s healthcare context, nutrition challenges, and the realities faced by families and clinicians. 
  • Safeguarding and ethical practice - Upholds safeguarding principles in all interactions. Adheres to safeguarding requirements and escalates concerns appropriately and promptly. Ensures clinical and programme communications are consistent with ethical and safeguarding standards. 
  • Operational awareness - Understands programme workflows and procurement processes, supporting smooth operational delivery. 

Operating System 

  • Windows users must be running Windows 11, fully up to date with the latest security updates  
  • Mac users must be running macOS Sonoma or later, fully up to date with the latest security updates 

Office Software  

  • Access to Microsoft Word desktop  
  • Ability to create, edit, and save standard document formats (e.g. .docx)  

Messaging  

  • WhatsApp desktop application installed and operational   
  • Active WhatsApp account linked to a mobile number  

General  

  • Sufficient hardware to run the above software without performance issues  
  • Stable internet connection
