JOB SUMMARY:
The AOPA Air Safety Institute (ASI) is dedicated to advancing general aviation (GA) safety through cutting-edge research, comprehensive analysis, and dynamic educational outreach. As a Video Producer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the quality and impact of ASI's video content across multiple platforms, with a strong focus on short-form content for social media and YouTube, as well as long-form videos, case studies, and documentaries. Your creative expertise will be instrumental in engaging audiences, supporting AOPA membership growth, and advancing ASI's mission. This role requires exceptional creativity, strong project management skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest production standards throughout the video development process.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Video Production (80%)
Creates compelling aviation safety video content that resonates with AOPA members, the aviation community, industry leaders, and policymakers, broadening ASI's reach and impact.
Develops and adapts video content for YouTube and social media platforms. Demonstrates strong social media acumen and understanding of platform-specific audiences, formats, trends, and engagement strategies to maximize the reach and impact of aviation safety messaging while maintaining ASI brand standards.
Develops and refines narration/voiceover scripts that are informative and engaging, ensuring the tone, style, and message align with each video's purpose.
Upholds the highest production standards, incorporating best practices in scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting, animations, and editing, while skillfully using b-roll footage and audio elements.
Conducts meticulous pre-production planning, managing all aspects of staging, set preparation, and logistics to ensure seamless production.
Travels as necessary for offsite filming.
Maintains a high level of situational awareness across the production calendar, proactively assessing all project requirements including footage needs, resources, equipment, SME availability, and existing assets. Evaluates project milestones and deadlines, ensuring that planned or captured content aligns with the intended scope.
Identifies gaps early, anticipates production challenges, prioritizes assignments, deconflicts scheduling issues, seeks continuous improvement, and makes timely adjustments to avoid delays or rework.
Communicates proactively to keep projects on track and upholds high production standards.
Collaboration and Learning (15%)
Collaborates with senior producers who provide feedback and guidance to help refine production quality, storytelling, and workflow.
Actively contributes to team meetings, participates in planning discussions, and works closely with peers to maintain consistency in ASI’s video style and messaging.
Knowledge and Skill Development (5%)
Actively seeks opportunities to expand video production proficiency, expertise, and knowledge of general aviation safety.
Develops expertise in evolving filmmaking and social media trends, audience behaviors, content formats, and recommends new approaches to expand ASI's reach and engage current and future generations of pilots.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
3-5 years of experience producing video content with demonstrated skills in cinematography, composition, lighting, audio, filming, graphics, illustrations, animations, color-grading and editing.
Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop; experience with 3D animations and photography is a plus.
Demonstrated knowledge of YouTube, social media platforms, audience engagement strategies, content trends, and platform-specific formats, including Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, and emerging digital channels.
Ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, consistently meeting tight deadlines.
A collaborative team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
A self-starter with a strong sense of initiative, urgency, and a commitment to exceeding expectations.
PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree in journalism, filmmaking, related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Possesses an FAA Private Pilot certificate or demonstrates a strong desire and commitment to earning one while employed at AOPA. Having an instrument rating, commercial pilot certificate, or flight instructor certificate is highly desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position works in an office setting with occasional work performed outside the office when filming outdoors or at other venues.
Typical working hours are 8:30 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with a one-hour lunch break. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Generally, a climate-controlled environment with occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when attending aviation-related events, including exposure to higher altitudes and confined spaces if in a general aviation aircraft.
This position requires some travel, possibly up to 5% of the time, to various general aviation or industry-related events. Travel is by aircraft (general aviation and commercial) and by road or public transit.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of this position are occasionally more than a typical standard office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to:
Sit for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.
Stand, walk, and move around during pre-production and filming.
Use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other equipment including video cameras, lighting, and props.
Communicate effectively via email, phone, and in-person, which requires clear speech, hearing, and vision.
Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds, such as video equipment.
Occasionally stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms during the course of normal office and video production activities.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This position is located at AOPA’s Frederick, MD, office.
The salary range for this position is: $57,000 - $64,000, depending on education and experience.
